Job summary
A central feature of the FSAs role is the protecting of public health through the shaping and delivery of official controls relating to the food that finds its way to plates across the country at every meal. From contaminants to food-borne diseases, our controls act as a way of stopping dangerous food from reaching the consumer. We are constantly at work to ensure the regulations that are in place are robust enough, whilst also helping to implement them, working closely with local authorities across the width and breadth of England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
We have an exciting role available for a Shellfish Official Controls Adviser to join our team and help with our continued efforts to deliver our controls with regards to live bivalve molluscs such as oysters, mussels and scallops.
Job description
You will be taking on a varied role that is always interesting, leading on data reviews, building strong working relationships with colleagues at the FSA and external partners, and ensuring the robust and ongoing delivery of our official controls across the shellfish industry. Assisting in the management of external delivery contracts and other matters that support our delivery of these vital checks, youll play an important role in maintaining the teams high standards and ensuring bivalves from the UK are safe to eat.

Application and shortlisting
Technical: You will be asked a question to confirm that you meet the Technical requirements of the role.
- A Science-based degree or significant experience of data analysis or interpretation
If you cannot answer yes to this question you will not be able to proceed further with your application.
You will then be asked to complete an application which will be used to assess you against the following essential and desirable criteria.
Experience
- Proven ability to analyse complex information and datasets to reach balanced decisions (Lead criteria)
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to quickly establish and maintain productive relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
- Excellent organisational skills including the ability to prioritise effectively and work to tight deadlines
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal and proven ability to articulate key messages effectively to different audiences
Lead Criteria
An initial sift may take place on just the identified Lead Criteria indicated.
In the event that we receive a large number of applications, the minimum pass mark for the Lead Criteria may be raised at shortlisting stage. Candidates who apply under the DCS, GPTW or RIS schemes and meet the minimum requirements will be unaffected by the pass mark raise.
