The Data Technology and Innovation team supports decision making across the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) through effective data and information management and analysis services.   

This dynamic and engaging role offers the right candidate a technically diverse opportunity to help shape the way MMO uses data to support operational delivery of Marine Planning, Marine Licensing and Fisheries Management.  

The role will support the GIS Services Manager and Data Manager in the acquisition, analysis, management, distribution, and publication of both geospatial and non-geospatial information. This supports both internal business and external engagement with stakeholders and the public.  

The MMO’s has a diverse social, economic, and environmental marine data and evidence base. This is in part delivered through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and a metadata catalogue. The post holder will support the implementation of data flows and assist in the innovation of data delivery across the organisation and Defra group through GIS services.   

Engaging with all teams across the MMO, this role will have the opportunity to work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will manage, analyse, and advise on the MMO’s use of data across a range of sources and industry sectors that operate throughout English waters. 

You will be expected to actively engage in continuous improvement and documentation of the team’s services and evolving ways of working.   

In this role, you will: 

  • work with and support all MMO functions, using a variety of geospatial and non-geospatial data to generate insight and support decision making.
  • communicate analysis effectively, including using cartography and visualisations to present information from complex geographic datasets.
  • work with a range of geospatial data sources, understanding their strengths and weaknesses in the MMO context.
  • quality assure data and visualisation products by applying data standards and making informed quality assessments.
  • acquire new data products through contracts, and agreements with government and non-government organisations.
  • manage data, associated metadata, and make them accessible to others, including building capability in their use, including compliance with licensing and access restrictions.
  • develop and construct data products and services, and integrate them into MMO systems and business processes.
  • develop and code (python, JavaScript, SQL) tools and workflows which improve efficiency and meets user needs.
  • grow data awareness and skills in other teams.
  • appropriately document processes and products to ensure business continuity.
