Job summary
The Directorate of Industrial Strategy and Exports (ISE) drives policy to optimise UK defence industry, delivers dedicated industrial programmes, develops and realises international export opportunities, ensures the Defence and Security Industrial Strategy is reflected in the investment approvals and planning processes and supports implementation of the industrial aspects of the Command Paper Refresh.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced leader to deliver the opportunities set out in the Defence and Security Industrial Strategy and the Defence Command Paper Refresh. You will direct resource and policy work across teams, contributing to wider Defence strategy and Security Policy. Work in this area is fast-paced and exciting, with opportunity to shape how the UK Government supports and collaborates with industry, drives growth, promotes trade and exports, and works with allies abroad.
You will already be a visible and authentic senior leader with a deep understanding of industry possessing the ability to win the trust and influence of a range of senior stakeholders showing sound judgement, diplomacy and tact.

Key Responsibilities
The current responsibilities of the role include:
- Delivering the ambition and objectives in the DSIS and Refreshed Defence Command Paper working closely with other government departments and industrial providers to build partnerships and the relationships necessary to build industrial capability, growth and opportunity, embedding industrial strategy as a key Defence output and vital consideration in the Departments decision making.
- Leading all aspects of our exports strategy and trade policy, working with Defence and Whitehall colleagues to develop a transformed export ecosystem that has a clear strategic direction to maximise opportunities and deliver Ministerial priorities.
- Providing strong leadership to a mixed civil servant and military team, with confidence challenging unacceptable behaviour and emphasis on continuous improvement and learning, promoting diversity and creating a safe and inclusive work environment. This will also involve building the team capability to provide quality advice to Ministers and work collaboratively with other government departments.
- Providing policy advice into teams across Defence to ensure capability development reflects wider Defence and government policy aims and increases international influence.
- You will also routinely engage with Department for Business and Trades Defence and Security Exports team to direct and deliver shared outcomes. Your work will affect the direction of the entire Department engaging with the Front Line Commands, Defence Equipment and Support and other delivery organisations. You will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Person specification
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their experience and skills against the following essential criteria:
- A track record of providing visible, authentic and skilled leadership in a large and complex organisation with a proven ability to set a compelling vision, build high performing teams, and create an inclusive culture.
- A deep understanding of industry, the complexities of working across government and international partners in order to enable successful delivery.
- The ability to exercise good judgement and decisions based on evidence, producing results to time and budget, in a challenging environment.
- The ability to build and maintain successful relationships with a complex set of stakeholders across a variety of organisations (both inside Government and external including internationally), winning the trust of those who may have differing or conflicting views and with the ability to challenge and influence when required;
- Evidence of ability to exercise sound judgements and decisions based on evidence and produce results to time and budget, operating under a challenging set of circumstances.
- The ability to collaborate, negotiate and influence within a broad network, achieving outcomes through strong relationships, persuasion and influencing rather than positional power.
