About the Office of the Secretary of State for Wales (OSSW)

The Office of the Secretary of State for Wales is the face of the UK Government in Wales and the voice of Wales in Westminster. We support the Secretary of State (SoS) for Wales and the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Wales (PUSS) in representing Wales at the heart of Government. The department plays a central role in shaping key Government priorities such as levelling up, the Union and net zero. We work in partnership with other UK Government departments and stakeholders to deliver a stronger Wales within a strong United Kingdom.

Description

We are recruiting for various roles at Executive Officer (EO) level which could include working as a:

  • Policy Officer
  • Corporate and Business Support Officer
  • Strategy and Planning Officer

Key Responsibilities could include:

  • Providing high quality advice and written briefing on policy matters.
  • Drafting responses to official and Ministerial level correspondence on a range of issues in line with internal procedures and deadlines.
  • Providing Business Management Support which might include diary management, minute taking, monitoring the shared mailboxes, and providing corporate support.
  • Supporting the department with employee engagement activities such as identifying and promoting volunteering and learning opportunities for staff and supporting with social mobility activities e.g., facilitating external visits to schools and similar venues to promote the work of the Department.
  • Working with Other Government Departments across Whitehall, the Welsh Government, and wider external stakeholders in Wales to ensure that Welsh interests are fully reflected in UK Government policy.
  • Assisting with routing IT and telephony queries from staff to our provider.

The key responsibilities are not intended to be exhaustive, and it is likely that duties may be altered from time to time in the light of changing circumstances and after consultation with the postholder.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft 365.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise and manage competing demands.
  • Demonstrable ability to work on own initiative.

Desirable:

Additional Information

The Office of the Secretary of State for Wales is not an employer in its own right. Staff recruited to work at the OSSW will be employees of the Ministry of Justice who provide employment services on our behalf.

This role requires baseline checks (BPSS), and you will need to confirm your employment history for at least 3 years prior to the date of application so that pre-employment checks can be undertaken.

If you have spent significant time abroad (a total of 6 months in the past 3 years) you would be required to give a reasonable account of the reasons why.
