Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team who deliver support to Dstl and other Government agencies for the thermal treatment of waste.

Based at Porton Down, the Dstl Specialist Facilities Group is responsible for disposing of hazardous waste produced by Dstl and other companies.  We operate the Destructor Complex which houses our incinerator, a national asset and our main disposal facility for explosive items, radiological and sensitive wastes. 

The incinerator operates on a 24 hours schedule so we are looking for an Incinerator Operator to join a small team who work collaboratively to ensure the waste facility is run in an efficient, safe and sustainable manner. Loading, moving, weighing and recording all types of waste, you will be hands on in an indoor and outdoor environment.

Job description

As an Incinerator Operator you will:

  • Initially undertake training before active duty at the Incinerator
  • Be trained in Working at Height and Confined Space
  • Become First Aid trained to support your colleagues.
  • Read and Work to relevant safety and procedural processes.
  • Work in full NBC kit and wear a General Service Respirator
  • Be able to read chemical and colour coded labels.
  • Work to quality standards – to include maintaining training and competency records.
  • Need to be a flexible with shift patterns to support operational needs.
  • Dispose of waste delivered into the facility in specified quantity and pace.
  • Complete documentation to a high standard
  • Perform other trained tasks as needed.
  • manually move waste around site in wheeled bins.
  • Record and load waste into our incinerator repetitively over a 12hr shift.
  • Work mainly outside, then inside a covered vented area for the disposal process.

You will be required to wear and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in all locations (e.g. Work in full NBC kit and wear a General Service Respirator,

safety shoes, Gloves,  Hi-Viz) which will be provided.

Person specification

We are looking for someone who;

  • Is self motivated, flexible, willing to train and learn in an ever changing environment.
  • Has a good standard of general education e.g. GCSEs or equivalent including English and Mathematics.
  • Is able to use a variety of vehicle (Driving Licence B)
  • Has an understanding risk management and assessments
  • Is able to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Is able to use MS Office 2016 Applications (Outlook, Excel, Word)

Desirable Experience

  • Has a background in Mechanical Engineering or experience of working with light tools an advantage
  • Has experience of escorting visitors /contractors in a hazardous environment.
  • Has a Forklift Licence:  Counterbalance.
  • Is trained in working in Confined Spaces and/or Working at Height and/or First Aid.
  • Wamitab QCF Level 2 Qualification.
  • Previous experience working in an incinerator environment.

Alongside your salary of £21,333, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory contributes
