Job description

Join the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) in this key specialist role as a Senior Qualified Accountant.  This is a role offering significant scope, with responsibility across delivery, policy, strategic direction, and leadership.

The Submarine Production (SMP) team is responsible for managing the build and Sea Trials of Astute Class submarines prior to entry into service, working closely with suppliers and a wide stakeholder base.

You will strategically lead a team, encourage a culture of imaginative thinking, learning from experience and driving for improved quality by challenging the status quo.  The role ensures that project costs are rigorously controlled, and relevant financial and performance reporting requirements are met through the provision of specialist financial services.  The role enables Project Managers to deliver on scope, to time and to budget and make informed strategic decisions.

Your primary base is BAES Barrow-in-Furness, however we operate a hybrid working environment where there is an expectation to attend site at least once a week, however this may vary dependent on business needs.

Responsibilities

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead an experienced and dynamic financial team ensuring appropriate delegation of work, Support, and development opportunities
  • Oversee the monthly financial forecasting process for the Delivery Team, including financial risk, and accurate and insightful commentary, challenge and variance analysis. Lead on the Financial input and information at the Project Manager (PM) / Control Account Manager (CAM) monthly forecast reviews to empower stakeholder decision making
  • Oversee the Financial input to the Annual Budget Cycle process in conjunction with PM/Project Control Manager (PCM) and with the production of the Programme Cost Review (PCR) forecasts and the provision of Screening Packs
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders in providing technical accounting guidance, advising of key risks and ensuring the accuracy and robustness of reporting. Lead the team in actively supporting audit and internal compliance.  Advise on accounting and forecasting implications of policy and programme decisions.  Liaise with Finance & Accounting (F&A) colleagues to ensure that VAT and FOREX treatment is correct
  • Provide key support to the business area to analyse, understand and report on financial performance against delivery schedules and targets, provide analysis of risks and opportunities, and working collaboratively provide prompt evaluation of proposals and Business Cases, returning feedback to the PM and Finance Business Partner
  • Oversee the Cost Control Finance team in working with Estimators to develop cost models and assist in the production of business proposals. Monitor project expenditure against approval
  • Lead the team in working with PM/Scheduler/PCM to implement Cost Loaded Schedules to drive forecasting. Guide the production of Earned Value Management (EVM) analysis to demonstrate project performance and analyse variances to plan, determine impact on the schedule and cost to complete the scope of work. Ensure consistency with IYM and EVM reporting
  • Advise on good financial management to contribute to good governance
  • Advocate and contribute to wider Finance Function responsibilities and activities whilst maintaining your CPD requirements

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Qualified accountant CCAB (including ICAEW, ACCA, CIPFA, ICAS, Chartered Accountants Ireland, CIMA or International equivalent), with full membership (Post Nominals i.e. with letters) of the relevant accounting body
  • Have significant post-qualified experience and knowledge in financial and management accounting techniques
  • Be able to demonstrate that you are an experienced leader, who can work on your own initiative and has had exposure to senior stakeholders
