Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to help drive forward the Joint Intelligence Organisation’s (JIO) use of graphic design, data visualisation and other forms of visual storytelling as a core part of our intelligence assessment. We are looking for a dedicated individual with an aptitude for creativity to join the JIO’s Insights Hub as a Senior Information Designer. This is a unique opportunity to continue developing a unique capability within the UK intelligence assessment community. Candidates should have a passion for finding new and innovative ways to visualise unique stories within intelligence assessment.

The JIO Insights Hub fosters a culture of innovation and inclusion, believing our success comes through diversity of thought, experience and background. You will be empowered to manage the day-to-day projects, develop relationships across the organisation and try new ideas which will drive forward the JIO’s bar-setting vision for high-value, innovative intelligence assessment.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the centre of UK national security. You’ll be creating visual products which ultimately help to inform the UK’s response to priority national and international issues on a daily basis.

Job description

About the JIO

The Joint Intelligence Organisation (JIO) primarily supports the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) and the Foreign Policy and Security Council, the Prime Minister and other key decision-makers by providing authoritative, robust all-source intelligence assessment on a vast range of national security and foreign policy priorities.

Our work covers, and goes beyond, ‘traditional’ national security topics such as geopolitical issues and threats to British interests. We apply a national security lens to issues such as emerging technology, economic and health security, climate change and horizon scanning (for example, identifying and monitoring countries at risk of instability).

You can read more about working for the JIO in the information pack attached at the bottom of this advert.

The Role

As a Senior Information Designer, you will be managing the day-to-day production of best-in-class visual assessments. You will also be working with the Principal Designer, the Graphics Desk and wider Insights Hub Specialists to find new and innovative ways to visualise intelligence assessment for the Prime Minister and other senior officials. You will be responsible for imagining, creating and maintaining these visual experiences to help our customers understand the latest assessments. Focusing on one or more specialities – such as graphic design, digital illustration and/or data visualisation  – you will produce high-impact infographics and other visuals on a daily basis, collaborating with subject matter experts on the most important national security issues of the day.

This post is only open to British Citizens. Some dual nationals may be ineligible. The successful candidate must obtain Developed Vetting (DV) clearance if not already held. As they will have access to very sensitive information, there are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries and we will undertake additional security checks as part of the recruitment process.  Applications from candidates with close connections to certain countries may take considerably longer to process, or in some cases result in a withdrawal of an offer of employment.  Further details will be provided at the conditional offer stage.

Responsibilities

If your application is successful, you will:

  • Collaborate with fellow Insights Hub Specialists and wider JIO Intelligence Analysts to produce best-in-class visual products that will be seen by the Prime Minister and other senior officials on a daily basis.
  • Work with the Team Principal to develop design concepts
  • Manage the day-to-day visual production of the team. Coordinating the delivery of multiple visual products at pace.
  • Review and confidently provide feedback on analyst produced visuals. Ensuring consistency with the house style and maintaining a rigorous quality control process.
  • Scope out complex requirements and confidently communicate ideas to analysts and non-familiar audiences.
  • Contribute to your team’s wider work or to other JIO work, both to support colleagues and for your own development. You may occasionally be asked to support crisis working or work unsociable hours.

Person specification

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have proven experience in creative and deadline driven environments.
  • Have experience with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and/or Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Be passionate about creating compelling visual experiences with a strong aesthetic. Having knowledge of editorial layout, graphic fundamentals and typography.
  • Tell stories in innovative ways with an enthusiasm to constantly push the creative and technological boundaries of JIO assessment.
  • Use analytical skills to identify storytelling opportunities. Able to confidently and independently search and analyse datasets, with a desire to eventually upskill in data analysis or advanced data visualisation (R, Python).
  • Relevant experience in graphic design or geospatial intelligence roles.
  • Have a Level 5 or above qualification in graphic design, cartographic or other related subjects. Level 5 qualifications accepted are Diploma of Higher Education (DipHE), Foundation Degree, Higher National Diploma (HND), Level 5 Award, Level 5 Certificate, Level 5 Diploma or Level 5 NVQ.

We invest in upskilling our team members to enable them to thrive once they start working with us. As such, if you don’t quite match these desirable skills, don’t let it put you off applying as we will equip the successful candidate with them once you are in post. The application process will seek to gauge potential just as much as current performance.
