About HM Treasury

If you’re interested in making a difference to people’s lives, the Treasury can offer you an exciting opportunity to influence decision making that affects the whole of the UK. Working at the heart of government, we collaborate across government to promote responsible public spending and drive strong and sustainable economic growth.

Our work ranges from protecting customers through the regulation of the financial sector, helping to reduce carbon emissions and creating a greener economy, to promoting British trade around the world and supporting people across the country on jobs, growth and more.

HM Treasury is proud of a diverse and inclusive work environment, committed to fairness and the promotion of equality of opportunity for all. We know that having a range of experiences, ways of working and thinking makes us stronger and better at developing policy that reflects the needs of every community. We embrace different views and experiences and value the new perspective that people from a variety of circumstances bring to the work we do. We welcome applications from candidates who have not previously worked for the Civil Service, mid- and late-career changers with transferrable skills, people from all backgrounds and circumstances regardless of disability, gender, age ethnicity, LGBT+ identity and socio-economic status.

We are part of the Darlington Economic Campus, a pioneering new cross-government hub which brings people together to play an active role in the most important issues of the day whilst working closer to the communities we serve. The campus provides the opportunity for people from all over the UK to help shape the future of the country, and our flexible working practices ensure you can collaborate effectively with our partners. It’s central government, made more accessible to you!

Job description

About the Group

The Enterprise and Growth Unit (EGU) promotes sustainable economic growth and higher productivity for the UK. We provide analysis and advice on enterprise, innovation, private sector investment and a cost-effective transition to a low-carbon economy. The Enterprise and Growth Unit has a varied and exciting agenda and we work closely with a wide variety of other teams across the Treasury.

We also work alongside other departments and government organisations to ensure that we are thinking creatively, spending wisely, and acting boldly to deliver these goals. These organisations are:

  1. the Department for Business and Trade,
  2. the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero,
  3. the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs,
  4. the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology,
  5. the Department for Transport,
  6. the Department for Culture, Media & Sport,
  7. the Competition and Markets Authority,
  8. HM Land Registry, and
  9. UK Export Finance

About the Team

Companies and Sectors Analysis is a friendly and inclusive team that leads Treasury analysis on the health of the UK corporate sector. We work closely with partners such as the Bank of England, the Office for National Statistics and Department for Business and Trade with our analysis playing a key role in shaping government policy on business.

Our work sits in a sweet spot between micro and macroeconomics, meaning there is a real opportunity to work across these areas. Recent projects include leading analysis on the Chancellor’s strategy for Autumn, producing a Corporate Sector Health and Resilience dashboard in Python and examining the role of corporate profits on the wider economy.

The wider team contains a mix of analysts and policy professionals, with varied backgrounds in the public and private sectors, including as economists, policy officials and finance professionals. We are looking for someone who shares our passion for understanding business and commercial matters, and their link to public policy, and who can draw on a wide set of evidence and experience in their work.

We accommodate flexible working patterns and support a positive work-life balance. We actively encourage individuals from a range of backgrounds to apply and are excited to be spread across offices in different regions of the country.

About the Job

People with strong analytical skills who are confident working with data and applying their knowledge to a wide range of economic questions would make an excellent fit in the team. The post holder will need to get up to speed on issues quickly, draw insights from a variety of sources, and communicate their findings clearly.

Business and/or finance experience is not essential, but we encourage candidates who can demonstrate an active curiosity about this area, including those with accounting, economics, finance, or consulting backgrounds, as well as existing civil servants.

The team works with many different parts of the Treasury and your priorities will reflect emerging policy issues. This means you can test and develop your analytical skills while directly influencing decision-making.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Supporting the development of high-quality analysis to inform policy thinking.
  • Communicating analytical findings in an accessible and clear manner, both written and verbally for a range of audiences including policy colleagues, senior officials and ministers.
  • Building working relationships with partners across the Treasury, Government, and external bodies.
  • Innovating the team’s analysis through bringing new insights, datasets and techniques to our work

Candidates should be confident and proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel, and have some basic experience of coding software, such as Python or R, with a willingness to develop these skills further.

The team will also actively support your learning and development objectives alongside the day to day work and will try to incorporate these into workstreams where possible.

A degree in an analytical subject or relevant work experience is desirable.

Many areas of your life may be explored during your vetting journey, and it is important that every individual, regardless of their background and experiences, should feel comfortable going through this personal process, whilst having confidence that it is fair, proportionate, and inclusive.

These short videos address common concerns and preconceptions which applicants may have about national security vetting.
