Job summary

The Defence School of Marine Engineering (DSMarE) is a personnel and training organisation situated at HMS Sultan, the Gosport site for the Tri-service, Defence College of Electro-mechanical Engineering (DCEME)

Main outputs are the training of Royal Navy Marine Engineers and Technicians, Army and RAF specific courses and some commercial training.  The DSMarE also provides personnel support for its staff and other users of the Gosport site.  Many of these functions are provided through a contractual arrangement with Babcock Limited which also markets spare capacity for income generation.  HQ DCEME acts as the primary administrative authority for DSMarE and provides financial services, contracts oversight and property management functions.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. 

Job description

Primary duties will involve the delivery of workshop theory, practical instruction to Service and Civilian trainees to Foundation Degree/ Defence standards.

 Secondary roles include: providing Subject Matter Expertise on the courses delivered and liaising with external authorities, ships, establishments and other military units to provide technical support and advise where required.

The post holder will also be expected to prepare course documentation, assess and mark tests and examinations, develop new course material as required and the minor maintenance and repair of training equipment and training aids.

 As a member of a training delivery team of 10 band D, Specialist Instructional Officers; experience is required in all aspects of fitting, turning, milling and grinding as well as being to interpret engineering drawings in accordance with BS8888.                       

Person specification

Candidates will have served a recognised apprenticeship or a relevant alternative period of training in Fitting and Turning processes to the appropriate ONC, City and Guilds (part III), BTEC or an equivalent level qualification, plus have recent experience within the appropriate workshop skills. Applicants who have completed a full Services Engineering Apprenticeship plus recent practical experience in that trade or specialisation will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.

 Previous experience in a training/instructional role would be beneficial but training in Defence instructional techniques will be provided for the successful applicant without prior experience.

  • Practical Turning Exercise which includes screw cutting
  • A fifteen minute lesson presented on one of the following, the use of a 0-25mm Micrometer, Screw Cutting using a single point tool on a centre lathe of Taper Turning on a centre lathe.

This post attracts a £6000 per annum Market Skills Allowance in addition to the advertised £28300

Selection process details

Selection will be by practical test in all workshop processes given above and a short lecture and interview.
