Job summary
This is an exciting time to join the Department for Business and Trade. Our aim is to promote British trade and investment across the world which is vital for the prosperity of the UK. The Department brings together policy, promotion, and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed.
In the aftermath of the illegal attack on Ukraine by the Russian government, the Department established a permanent Trade Sanctions team, based in Trading Systems Group. The response to the crisis has placed significant additional pressure and novel requirements on our sanctions system, and we now have a larger, higher profile body of work with far greater operational requirements.
The Trade Sanctions team is increasing its capability in both implementation and enforcement. A large expansion is planned for these purposes, which will deliver on key areas including guidance, outreach, monitoring, and enforcement. As part of a newly forming team to meet these challenges, you will have the opportunity to help shape its remit and culture, ensuring that the team delivers on this high-profile area of trade policy. As this is a new team, the successful candidate will need to recognise that responsibilities will evolve over time.
Job description
This role is being advertised to help further develop the Departments capabilities in trade sanctions enforcement.
You will work closely with teams across the department including Analysis, Legal, Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU), Global Supply Chains, Export and Investment, Global Trade and Delivery as well as with multiple government departments including Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO), Department for Transport (DfT), Cabinet Office, His Majesty’s Treasury (HMT), His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), and the Office for Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI).
Initial priorities for this role will focus on developing knowledge on trade and sanctions, and engagement with businesses across multiple sectors. You will need to quickly build your knowledge on trade sanctions, working closely Cross-Whitehall to coordinate and enhance how we detect and prevent sanctions breaches.
You will contribute to compliance and enforcement casework in relation trade services sanctions breaches. With support, you will plan how to investigate cases, gather evidence (including through engaging with all parties involved in a breach of sanctions and conducting open-source research) and working with lawyers and other interested partners to determine the most appropriate compliance outcomes.
On behalf of the team, you also perform efficient administration duties to support committees, senior management meetings, work group, projects/ programmes, business planning, events management and successfully prioritise workloads.
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Essential Criteria
- A good understanding of the political landscape and awareness of international sensitivities.
- Able to think in an objective and analytical manner you will be able to assess complex information from a variety of sources to draw conclusions.
- Able to make confident, high-quality and evidence based recommendations; in line with guidance and the Law.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex subjects and provide clear advice.
- Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information and enquiries.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in a compliance or law enforcement area.
- Drafting briefings, papers and other materials related to the policy area.
- Experience of analysing data, information & statistics from a wide range of sources.

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
