The Role
You will be based in the Science Directorate, which is a team of specialists who support the organisation in their ambitions to be evidence-led and driven by science.
We lead on the development and application of natural, economic and social science and evidence to underpin and enable the achievement of environmental outcomes both within Natural England and externally.
We are looking for an enthusiastic wildlife disease specialist to join the species team in Natural England and to work alongside our principal specialist in wildlife health to deliver advice across the organisation. Understanding the impact of disease on the health of wildlife populations is an important work area which this role will help Natural England respond to.
Key Tasks and Accountabilities
- Working with the principal specialist to provide technical leadership for the organisations science and evidence requirements for wildlife disease and wildlife health.
- Ensuring that the best available science and evidence is synthesised into impactful operational products and advice
- Undertake analysis (qualitative and quantitative) of the evidence base to inform and support the provision of advice internally and externally
- Communicating Natural Englands advice and position on wildlife health to a range of audiences, internally and externally
- Bringing new ideas and innovation, gained from networking and horizon scanning externally, to improve Natural Englands work on wildlife health
- Undertaking/providing advice on disease risk assessments in wildlife (e.g. species reintroduction, translocations of species impacted by development)
- Identify strategic research and development requirements to support advice wildlife disease and wildlife health. Working in collaboration with other bodies to expand the evidence base.
The ideal candidate will be qualified to at least BSc level in an biological discipline, or, can demonstrate equivalent experience. A veterinary qualification is desirable, but not essential.
The role may include advising on/analysing evidence in relation to Natural Englands work on badgers and bTB, therefore knowledge on this topic would be desirable (but not essential).

Locations
Natural England is adopting hybrid working which means our staff work from a flexible range of locations, encompassing home, offices (ours and our partners) and relevant sites. All new staff will be formally linked to one of our 25 offices across England and the expectation is that all new staff will be able to access their local office to be part of the community of staff in their geographical area. Full time staff are expected to attend their associated office for a minimum of one day a week. Staff members are required to carry out all their duties working in this way and cannot do so from an
overseas location at any time. Travel expenses will be paid if work related travel is required but does not apply to travel between home and your associated office.
