Job summary

In this exciting 11-week paid placement, starting in September 2024, you’ll use your language skills and cultural knowledge to make a real impact on our operations. Day to day, you’ll develop your understanding of language as you analyse, transcribe, and translate audio and written materials. Some of these materials may be technical or specialised in nature, giving you a chance to master new skills in a unique field. But your growth doesn’t stop there.

Job description

Here, your influence goes beyond language. Your cultural understanding will be invaluable as you collaborate closely with customers and partners, providing crucial context and delivering briefings to your team. In fact, you may even get the chance to create intelligence reports during your time with us. Armed with a variety of special tools, you’ll conduct research and uncover valuable insights that you’ll then present back to your team. Your skills will have a genuine impact and you’ll be making a vital contribution to UK security, working as part of a mixed team of experienced Analysts and Language Analysts.

Person specification

We’re looking for talented, adaptable, and committed people from all backgrounds. You’ll either be in the final year of your undergraduate degree in Mandarin or have graduated in summer 2020 or later with a 2:2 grade or above in Mandarin. We want people who are keen to use their language skills and eager to improve.

You don’t need a technical background for this role. But at GCHQ we ask for an aptitude for tech and at GCHQ and MI5 a willingness to learn new skills to complement your language ability. We also have dedicated training programmes to support our Language Analysts throughout their career.

Training and Development

From day one, we’ll be here to support you. When you join MI5 and GCHQ, you’ll receive comprehensive language and analysis training, including classroom and hands-on learning to boost your skills. Along with this, you’ll also be paired with a language mentor who will help you settle in and enhance your Mandarin skills.

On completion of the programme, you can apply for a permanent position with us. If successful in your interview and tests, you’ll join a vibrant community of specialists as a Language Analyst. But your journey doesn’t stop there.

During your first five years as a Language Analyst at GCHQ, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for our Language Career Development Scheme (LCDS). This scheme is designed to broaden and refine your language skills, giving you even more room to grow. At MI5 and GCHQ, you’ll also have the chance to become a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIoL) and gain recognised professional linguist qualifications.

Rewards and Benefits

At MI5 and GCHQ, you’ll receive a starting salary of £5,746 – £5,820 for the 11-week internship.

MI5 applicants who pass the end-of-programme entry language tests and accept an offer of employment will receive a starting salary in excess of £37,414. Along with this, you’ll also enjoy:

  • 5 days of annual leave during the internship
  • Access to a subsidised gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars
  • A prime central London location

GCHQ applicants who pass the end-of-programme entry language tests and accept an offer of employment will receive a starting salary in excess of £32,092 and enjoy benefits, including:

  • 5.5 days of annual leave during the internship
  • Access to a subsidised gym, restaurant, and on-site coffee bars in the Cheltenham office
  • An excellent city centre location with multiple transport links in the Manchester office.
