Job summary

Thank you for your interest in the post of Head of Technical Education & Training with Historic Environment Scotland, based at The Engine Shed. This is a permanent and pensionable appointment.

 

As Head of Technical Education & Training, you will be the lead for HES on skills & training relating to the conservation, repair and maintenance of the historic built environment, across craft, technical and professional roles. You will be responsible for the Engine Shed, Scotland’s Building Conservation Centre and our other skills training facilities and programmes.

Technical Education and Training (TET) is a multidisciplinary team that delivers across 4 areas of operation: Vocational Training Programmes, Academic Training Programmes, Training & Qualification Development and Engine Shed Programme & Quality Assurance.

 

TET provides leadership in the sector in championing knowledge, skills & materials as being key to sustaining Scotland’s cultural heritage assets. We expand our collective knowledge and expertise through research & applied projects that set standards & provide learning outcomes. We are innovative in outlook & approach, and embrace the opportunities provided by digital technology, whilst using our traditions to provide innovative solutions to today’s problems. We enable better stewardship through sharing our knowledge, skills & expertise through training, education, outreach & engagement, and through learning with and from others.

As Head of TET, you will be the lead for HES on skills & training relating to the conservation, repair and maintenance of the historic built environment, across craft, technical and professional roles. You will work with a wide range of stakeholders at a senior level to develop and influence best practice around training and skills delivery and its implementation by HES and others across the heritage, education, and construction sectors in Scotland, as well as represent HES at a national & international level. You will be responsible for the Engine Shed, Scotland’s Building Conservation Centre and our other skills training facilities and programmes. You will be responsible to the Director for ensuring the TET Work Programme is delivered & carried out in accordance with HES policies & procedures, ensuring the health & wellbeing of the TET team.

Person specification

Essential requirements:

  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of historic environment sector and its skills and training needs.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the principles of sustainable development how historic environment can contribute to it.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and managing multi-disciplinary projects and teams, including infrastructure, financial and human resources
  • Demonstrable knowledge of technical conservation skills at craft, technical and professional levels and the relevant educational processes, practices and frameworks that apply to them.
  • Ability to understand our sectors, identify and act on opportunities and to both lead and enable development of interdisciplinary projects and programmes, internally and externally.
  • Understanding of Climate Change impacts and the relevance of traditional skills in their mitigation, and ability to develop and deliver relevant project that demonstrate this.
  • Proven track record of forming effective and long-lasting operational and strategic relationships with credibility and expertise, with both individuals and organisations.
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and manage complex systems and interpret, analyse and solve complex competing priorities, whilst managing risk appropriately.
  • Understanding of strategic drivers and foresight of key emerging concepts and topics.
  • Appreciation of the importance of Quality Assurance within the educational and skills training sector.
  • Awareness of relevant Health & Safety regulations and other relevant legislation and regulations such as CDM, Safeguarding and Accessibility.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop and maintain a cohesive team spirit within a multi-disciplinary team operating in a fast-paced and challenging operational environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to see synergies, opportunities, and challenge thinking, to foster innovation.

 

Desirable requirements:

  • Ability to maintain and develop existing and new partnerships with cultural heritage colleagues across Scotland, UK and further afield.
  • Ability to operate both strategically and operationally with a range of partners of different types.
  • Ability to negotiate, develop project structures & partnership models.
  • Understanding of related subject areas – science and cultural heritage asset management.
  • Ability to network at a senior level and use it effectively to the benefit of the organisation.
