We are looking for a Key Stage 2 Teacher with experience in Literacy. 

Episkopi Primary School is one of four MOD primary schools situated in the West Sovereign Base Area of Cyprus (WSBA) overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

This position is advertised at 30 hours per week.   

Please be advised that Defence Children Services and Strategic Command are conducting a review of secondary education provision in Cyprus.  Some posts will be affected by this review however it is assessed that that this post will be unlikely to be subject to change before Autumn 2027. 

Job description

This appointment is subject to the teachers’ current conditions of employment contained in out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD), referring to MOD Schools teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, other current educational and employment legislation, relevant teacher standards and the school’s ethos statement.

 Under the reasonable direction of the headteacher, carry out the professional duties of a class teacher, as set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (STPCD), making reference to MOD Schools teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.  The post holder will also be expected to take on the leadership and management of a curriculum area in addition to their class role.

 Responsibilities specific to the post:

  • To undertake general duties involving the education and welfare of the pupils in accordance with the requirements of the “Conditions of Employment of School Teachers”, the EYFS Curriculum, the National Curriculum, the school’s aims and objectives, MOD policies and Contract of Employment, maintaining core or post threshold teaching standards as appropriate.
  • Set high expectations and ensure good progress and outcomes for all pupils in the class.
  • To undertake the teaching and maximise the learning of any group of children, as directed by the Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher/ Assistant Headteacher across all the primary subjects offered by the school.
  • To promote and celebrate high standards of achievement through excellent practice in all spheres of school life.
  • To lead the planning, organisation and maintenance of a learning environment appropriate to the developing needs and interests of children.
  • To maintain the highest standards of teaching and learning within a dynamic and purposeful curriculum, which provides high quality opportunities for all.
  • To share in the corporate responsibility for the wellbeing and good behaviour of all pupils in the school.
  • To take part in the school’s staff development programme by participating in arrangements for further training and professional development.
  • To foster and promote positive, effective relationships between staff, children and parents through personal and professional example.
  • To contribute and be committed to the development and communication of the long-term vision of the school.
  • To take an active participation in the self-review and evaluation procedures and practices of the school (SEF/SDP).
  • To work closely with colleagues to ensure effective transition between phases/year groups.
  • To work closely with colleagues to ensure the continuity of experience both across the phase and between phases to ensure children make good progress and standards of achievement are raised.
  • To be personally responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children s/he is responsible for, or encounters across the school.
  • To work with the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, Assistant Headteacher and other staff to monitor the development and progress of the children.
  • To establish and maintain good community relations by creating effective working links with parents, the wider community and external agencies as required.
  • To ensure that parents are given regular and frequent opportunities to discuss the progress of their children in line with the school’s open-door policy.            

 

Teaching and Learning Responsibility (Literacy including English and Early Reading)

  • To lead and develop staff within the area of responsibility, communicating effectively and ensuring successful team work.
  • To support the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and ensure that standards and expectations are met within appropriate phases or subject areas.
  • To develop and enhance the quality of learning and teaching and curriculum offer across a specified area of responsibility.
  • To deliver robust and impactful quality assurance through the school improvement agenda and keep abreast of changes to assessment and curriculum frameworks, research or guidance.
  • To secure and sustain the high profile of a specific area of responsibility in the school and continuously aspire to ambitious, high quality performance and outcomes.
  • To lead the development of appropriate resources, schemes of work, assessment policies and teaching and learning strategies and secure coverage of a relevant, high quality curriculum.
  • To work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and strategic plans which have coherence and relevance to the needs of pupils and to the aims and strategic plans of the school and DCS.
  • To establish and maintain clear improvement plans, milestones and performance targets.
  • To evaluate the quality of teaching and learning, curriculum provision and celebrate success and challenge underperformance where necessary to ensure short- and long-term improvements in the educational offer and in outcomes.
  • To collaborate with other colleagues to ensure that the work within the specified area of responsibility fully reflects the school’s distinctive ethos and vision.

  • To ensure that staff development needs are identified in order to improve the quality of education provided and appropriate programmes are identified to meet such needs.
  • To establish common standards of practice within the area of responsibility with regard to assessment of and for learning, adaptive teaching etc. and to develop high quality teaching and learning within the area.
  • To develop strategies to involve parents and carers in their children’s learning and in the life of the school and support them in understanding how they can help their children to succeed.

 

Staff Development:

  • To attend staff meetings and internal staff training days as required by the Headteacher.
  • Attend external in-service training as appropriate to the post as required by the Headteacher.
  • Deliver school-based training as necessary and appropriate to the professional development of staff.
  • Participate fully in MOD Schools’ performance management programme as administered within the school to support the School’s Improvement work as well as developing own professional needs.

Our Literacy Leader needs to be an excellent classroom practitioner to inspire and develop practice in others. The appointed candidate will take the lead role in Literacy across the school and this will include English and Early Reading, working with a team of colleagues to develop all elements of Literacy through the curriculum effectively across all phases.  The role is class based with appropriately allocated leadership time to develop this core role.  This is an exciting and key role in our school which will positively impact outcomes for our pupils and development for our staff.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for education combined with drive and determination. They will also need to demonstrate a secure of understanding of safeguarding, as we take our role in safeguarding very seriously.
