The Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Evidence Directorate of our Chief Scientists Directorate to help lead the use of DNA based approaches in the monitoring of habitats and species. One of Natural England’s strategic science and evidence shifts is to make greater use of innovative scientific technologies and applications. DNA based approaches have the potential to significantly change environmental and conservation monitoring by reducing costs, detecting cryptic species, monitoring functional assemblages, and supporting new ways of looking at biodiversity management.

Natural England has been investing in the use of DNA based approaches for several years beginning with our development of environmental DNA to detect the presence of great crested newts in ponds. Over the last few years we have run a number of projects looking at different applications in a range of ecosystems, such as marine fish assemblages, detecting grassland fungi from soil samples, and to detect invasive species. Through the Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment Programme, we have been working with colleagues developing monitoring metrics for ponds and soils. We are also beginning to undertake pilot studies to test the application of DNA based methods to help us understand ecosystem health.

We work with colleagues across the public sector and partners in academia through the UK DNA Working Group and the Defra Group Centre of Excellence for DNA based methods, as well as developing close working relationships with external projects that align to our objectives such as the UK Barcode of Life project.

It is Natural England’s policy to accommodate both full-time and other flexible working patterns.

Job description 1

We are looking for someone who has a broad combination of technical skills and experience in an environmental discipline. The role will support the development and delivery of introducing DNA based technologies for monitoring into Natural England.

Key tasks:

  • Develop and deliver DNA monitoring development projects and any contracts which form part of these.
  • Ensure effective project, contract and budget management that meets key milestones and indicators.
  • Communicate technical DNA methods, results, and progress to a range of audiences via reports, webinars, writing articles or social media.
  • Lead and manage the delivery of individual projects.
  • Develop internal and external partnerships, including with specialists, contractors, other organisations in the Defra Group and the research community.
  • Review methods and explore opportunities for improvements, enhancements and/or innovations.
  • Resolve problems that involve detailed investigation and analysis and the exercise of judgement in making recommendations or determining appropriate action. This may involve the application of different techniques and methods, testing options and interpretation of results as the basis for proposals or recommendations.
  • Advise colleagues across Natural England on the use of DNA techniques within their projects, for example on best practice and how to interpret results.

The successful candidate will be required to show flexibility in managing and adapting to other work should team priorities or resources change. This post will involve some national (UK) travel to internal NE meetings and meetings with stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Good organisational skills and experience of project management.
  • A knowledge of DNA based methods.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience of procurement processes.
  • A knowledge of Natural England’s monitoring programme.
  • Experience of working with partners, contractors and colleagues to deliver collaborative projects and to build individual and organisational capability.
  • Experience of working across disciplines to help develop new, innovative and long-term solutions, driving and supporting change (desirable).
