Job description
International Vehicle Standards (IVS) leads technical policy and regulation for new road vehicles from e-scooters & bicycles to the heaviest trucks, buses & coaches to agricultural tractors and off-road machinery. We are a team of over 30 policy and technical specialists, combining policy development and delivery with engineering & technology knowledge. We are the Departments experts on vehicle technology and set the technical standards aiming to deliver a safe, secure and sustainable low carbon road transport future.
We work closely with the UK automotive sector, international stakeholders and global partners to deliver the Governments policies. The DfT Agencies, Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA) and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), are our delivery partners to ensure that new vehicles comply with legal obligations.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- You will principally support the Senior Policy Advisor within the Vehicle Standards Compliance team and oversee delivery of the £3.5m market surveillance programme by the Market Surveillance Unit (MSU) in the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
- You will develop an understanding of the automotive market and set the policy direction for the MSU by agreeing which sectors of the market the MSU should investigate, working closely with your colleagues in DfT and its agencies.
- You will take forward policy work related to compliance of emissions standards in vehicles.
- You will monitor progress of the annual work programme, resolve policy queries to aid implementation of that programme, seeking legal advice when necessary.
- You will act as Secretariat for the Vehicle Standards Compliance and Enforcement Board.
- You will work outwardly facing to develop communications lines and keep fast-moving briefing packs up to date and relevant.
- You will have willingness to travel to Leeds, Swansea, Birmingham and London. This is usually once a month on a rotational basis and in addition every quarter to London for the Vehicle Standards Compliance and Enforcement Board. This can include an overnight stay depending on where the candidate is based.

About you:
Organisational skills are pivotal to this role and you will have the ability to deliver against multiple objectives, whilst maintaining the highest standards. You work well with colleagues at all levels, and see the importance of building effective working relationships both within and outside of your immediate team.
We are looking for someone who has exceptional communication skills and can express themselves in a confident and concise manner with colleagues at all levels. You will represent the department both professionally and clearly, ensuring key messages are delivered to both internal and external stakeholders in a timely fashion. You will have good drafting skills with the ability to produce high quality documents.
You would be described as a diligent person, happy to concentrate on your work and do a thorough job even when under pressure. You are ready to react quickly and will be a focused and calm person who can get the job done regardless of the environment you are in.
Additional Information:
A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
