We have an exciting opportunity for a GIS Data Validator to join our International Validation Team – part of the International Centre for Electronic Navigational Charts! You will receive full training in the validation of Electronic Navigational Charts which will cover the relevant standards as well as the specific software tools we use. Our team works closely with our regional offices in Australia, Brazil and the United States and presents a great opportunity to work with a growing international team. The team is specifically responsible for the quality assurance of digital maritime products supplied by producing organisations. To retain capacity to process an increasing throughput we require a Data Validator to join the UK based team.

The role of the Data Validator ensures IC-ENCs Global folio of ENCs to conforms to standards on behalf of IC-ENCs 49 producing organisations, this provides the opportunity to work with international colleagues to improve the quality of digital charts and develop into the future of global Maritime Data Products. You’ll have the chance to get involved in a variety of activities and contribute to the delivery of training, if this is something you are interested in. 

If you are a recent graduate with a degree in Geography, GIS or similar, this could be the role for you. Alternatively, you may have a background in marine navigation at sea or shore which brings a key user perspective to our team. All required training will be provided so what’s most important is having an enthusiasm for quality.

Hybrid Working

there will be an initial training period where the post-holder will be required in the office every day, after this period hybrid working will be available. There are some tasks within the team that require the post holder to be in the office, which is managed through a team rota.

Job description

As a Data Validator within the international validation team, your key tasks will be: 

  • Undertake validation and quality assurance of Maritime Data Products, principally Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) base cells and updates, using a variety of software tools in accordance with defined IC-ENC procedures.
  • Support the Conversion Readiness service and the assessment of S-100 Maritime Data Products
  • ENC File management including ECDIS loading checks
  • Create ENC data Exchange Sets for issuing to IC-ENC’s VARs.

Additionally, the role will support the IC-ENC Data Manager and wider Management Team in:  

  • Supporting the development of IC-ENC services into wider Maritime Data Products and services
  • Contributing to Continual Improvement activities within IC-ENC
