Job description

About the role

As an O Data & Systems Auditor (Tax Compliance), you will support Compliance Caseworkers in carrying out tax investigations into customers records, to identify and address any irregularities or non-compliant behaviour.

With coaching and mentoring from HO Data & Systems Auditors, you will help to provide technical systems and data interrogation support, with the intent of tackling non-compliance and electronic sales suppression. To do this you will be required to access, analyse and understand customers computerised systems, software, and data in relation to their accounts.

This is a vital role within tax compliance where we will provide you with the necessary support and learning needed. Should you have the desire to progress further, we are committed to supporting your personal development.

What will I be doing?

Your job will involve:

  • Interviewing customers and their representatives as part of supporting investigations, either virtually or face-to-face
  • Identifying and documenting systems and audit trails, including details of the different software used by the customer
  • Inspecting electronic accounting systems to access relevant data
  • Analysing and evaluating basic systems and datasets as well as supporting Higher Officer Systems Auditors with in-depth analysis of more complex systems and data, using a variety of tools
  • Testing accuracy of customers’ financial accounting and tax liabilities
  • Updating and sharing internal guidance with approvers, including internal guidance, knowledge of systems, audit techniques and best practise in-line with the systems encountered and audits undertaken
  • Reconstructing partial data records using best judgement, logic, and available evidence
  • Producing audit reports to document your findings and recommendations
  • Providing evidence to support tax evasion referrals and decisions regarding customer behaviours

Training

All new audit trainees will be placed on the audit learning routeway, which may take up to 19 months to complete.

During initial part of the training period, we will need you to work Monday to Friday within HMRC standard operating hours, for a period of 12 weeks. This is even if you have an agreed Flexible Working Arrangement in place.

Working arrangements

HMRC operates seven days a week and 24 hours a day. HMRC ‘standard operating hours’ are 7am to 8pm from Monday to Saturday. Here is how we work in Customer Compliance Group (CCG):

  • 37 hours between 7am to 8pm Monday to Saturday
  • There are several business areas within CCG. You may be required to work outside of these hours if you are allocated to a specific business area
  • If you are posted to an area with working arrangements that fall outside of our standard hours, you may be eligible for flexitime
  • Further information will be provided during training if this affects you based on the role allocated
  • Your working arrangement may change in-line with business needs, and that could include increased weekend or evening working. We will always give you reasonable notice of any changes to your working arrangement
  • There may be a requirement for occasional travel with some overnight stays. Some roles may require more frequent travel

Part-time working opportunities (minimum 22 hours per week covering various arrangements during our opening times) and flexible working arrangements can be requested. It depends on the business area whether these can be agreed, so we’ll work it out on an individual basis.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths, Ability, Experience and Technical skills.

We know applying for a job can be daunting, but try not to feel concerned, we really are a friendly team and are here to support you.

To help you prepare, below is a rundown of what to expect during the selection process:

  • Short Application
  • Numerical Test
  • Verbal Test
  • Personal Statement (up to a max. of 250 words)
  • Video Interview – This will contain questions on Technical skills (focussed on data interrogation), Behaviours and Strengths – Further information on Success Profiles

After submission of your application, you will be invited to complete two online tests (Numerical and Verbal Tests). We recommend you have access to a desktop computer or laptop and somewhere quiet to do this. You must be successful at each stage to progress to the next test.

Please complete the online tests as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended), the closing date for the tests is 11:30 a.m. on 25 July 2023.

You are advised to attempt the tests as soon as practical to do so, to enable any potential technical issues to be resolved before the tests closed. There will be no extension to the deadline for completing the tests. If you fail to complete the online test before the deadline your application will be withdrawn. Guidance for the test will be available when you are invited to take the test.

The tests are administered online and accessed via the CS Jobs website.

The online tests for this vacancy are not timed and there are no restrictions on how long you take to complete them, but they must be fully submitted before 11:30 a.m. on 25 July 2023. This is important as we don’t want you to miss out on your opportunity.

Please ensure that any technical issues with the test are reported immediately prior to 8:00 a.m. on 25 July 2023.

To ensure that all candidates are treated equally, we are unable to accommodate any flexibility against this deadline.

If you are successful after both tests you will be required to complete a Personal Statement with a maximum word limit of 250 words. For the Personal Statement you will need to provide a response to the following question – please describe why you enjoy working with data and the key things you consider when analysing a large amount of information.

HMRC will then review the number of candidates who have passed both tests and met the benchmark on for the Personal Statement.

As we often receive a very high level of applications, we reserve the right to raise the pass mark on the Personal Statement and tests, to manage the number of successful candidates to be interviewed.

Candidates with the minimum required pass mark will have their scores banked against the Numerical Test and Verbal Test.

Interview dates to be confirmed.

A reserve list may be held for a period of up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made for the same or similar roles – if this applies to you, we’ll let you know via your Civil Service Jobs account.
