Job summary
This is an exciting time to join the Data Protection Team in the Department for Business & Trade (DBT). We are working to embed a major compliance strategy and you will be part of a collaborative Knowledge and Information Management Team (KIM) of subject matter experts.
DBT supports UK businesses to grow, create jobs and take advantage of the global appetite for British goods and services, as well as to assist international companies to collaborate with UK suppliers. We are based in Whitehall but also have offices both across the country and around the world.
KIM play an important role within the Department for Business & Trade. It is imperative that systems and procedures are in place to ensure that material is held securely, knowledge is not lost, and information is managed, controlled and exploited appropriately.
We are seeking a Data Protection Training & Awareness Officer who will play a key role in the Data Protection Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the delivery of training and awareness activity and will contribute to DBTs Data Protection Training & Awareness Strategy.
This is an opportunity for the right candidate to develop within a high performing team. The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the Data Protection Advocacy Manager and will support goals to educate, promote and engage the organisation on data protection obligations under UK GDPR.
Job description
You will provide support to the implementation of policies and processes to ensure adherence to relevant legislation. You will support a range of data protection and information assurance workstreams, playing a lead role in team activity focused on developing training and awareness content and delivery. Specific responsibilities will include:
- Monitoring and promoting compliance with, and acting as a primary source for expert advice and guidance about, UK GDPR and Data Protection law.
- Delivering tailored and targeted training sessions to areas of the organisation, developing staff awareness of GDPR awareness across the department, and identifying innovative methods of engagement and communication.
- Providing expert, well-structured and detailed advice and guidance to colleagues about their obligations under privacy and data protection legislation, ensuring legislation is accurately applied, and best practice is followed.
- Working collaboratively with the Data Protection Compliance Team to identify trends in data incidents/breaches and ways training can reduce risk.
- Helping to drive engagement with and adherence to policies and standards at an operational level, helping to shape the overall data protection and information strategy.
- Providing assurance to ensure controls which manage risks associated with data protection and GDPR are adequately designed, implemented and effective.
The role will be based in either Belfast, Birmingham,Cardiff, Darlington, Edinburgh, London, or Salford You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Essential Criteria
While a data protection qualification is not mandatory, the following are essential requirements for the role:
- Experience of or a demonstrable understanding of information management, data protection and the associated legislation.
- Knowledge of the Data Protection Act provisions and experience of managing data protection/information governance tasks effectively.
- Proven track record of subject matter expertise; providing advice & guidance on data protection legislation queries.
- Experience of managing a wide range of stakeholders.
Desirable Criteria
- Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection or equivalent experience.
- Relevant professional qualification or equivalent extensive experience in a dedicated Information Governance, Security, Privacy or Data Protection management and/or compliance role.

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
