Job summary

Trade remedies policy is at the forefront of the government’s domestic and international trade agenda.  

We are recruiting for a stretching SEO role that would see the successful candidate working in a challenging, interesting, and dynamic trade policy space. You will be at the heart of domestic and/or international policy development either delivering crucial work to help transform the UK’s trade remedies framework, helping to resolve fascinating policy issues or helping to lead UK preparations for international trade negotiations. The world of trade remedies plays a key role in promoting free and fair trade, tackling unfair trade, and levelling the playing field for UK businesses. 

You will closely collaborate with a range of colleagues inside and outside of the team and Department, including analysts, lawyers, policy specialists and operations/policy experts at the Trade Remedies Authority.  

Training and development will be offered and the opportunity to join the Policy and International Trade Profession.  

This is an exciting time to be joining the department’s new Trade Defence Directorate. We are a relatively newly established Directorate within the Trading Systems Group. Our mission is to ensure the UK is defended from unfair trade, market distortions and emerging threats to protect our economic prosperity and security. This role will play a key part in implementingtrade remediesto protect UK business from injury caused by cases of dumping, unfair subsidies, and surges of imports.

Job description

The responsibilities of this role include work across either the domestic or international teams: 

  •  Developing and implementing trade policy consistent with the UK’s domestic and international priorities.
  • Developing strong and positive relations across the department, Whitehall and with key external stakeholders.  
  • Developing an understanding of international legal commitments and agreements, and domestic legislation.
  • Working closely with the wider Trade Remedies team, ensuring strategic and policy coherence across our FTA negotiations, domestic and international remedies policy, including our WTO policy positions. 
  • Working flexibly across Trade Remedies in line with the priorities of the wider team. 

Person specification

Essential Criteria 

  • This role will require outstanding communication and influencing skills to work collaboratively with internal and external colleagues, with the ability to manage and bring together a wide range of stakeholders with differing and conflicting views.
  • As Trade Remedies is a high-profile and fast-paced environment, the post holder also should demonstrate good evidence-based policy development and good analysis skills to present policy options and build consensus.
  • The post holder should have strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work with and persuade others and to establish collaborative relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • The successful candidate must hold or be willing to obtain SC security clearance and be willing to travel.

  • Experience of trade policy.
  • Understanding of global trade and the trade interests of the UK.

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
