Job summary

Are you looking for a change that is stimulating and rewarding! The Nuclear Department within, Navy Command, has an important role in providing education and training ranging from introductory to postgraduate level to Service and MOD Civilian personnel, in support of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme as well as bespoke courses for the wider nuclear industry.

Our multidisciplinary team consists of specialists in materials, physics, chemistry and thermal hydraulics related to nuclear power applications.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

You will play a key role in educating and training personnel involved in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program in Thermal Hydraulics.

Person specification

Deliver lectures, tutorials and research project design up to Level 7 (Masters Level). Design, develop and assess courses in:

  •  The fundamentals of heat transfer, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics applied to nuclear reactors.
  • Design and assessment of thermal hydraulic reactor performance and safety under normal and postulated accident scenarios.
  • Thermal hydraulic methods and models used to estimate multiphase heat and mass transfer in nuclear systems.
  • Thermal hydraulic design and safety codes (systems and subchannel scales) and their verification and validation.
  • Experimental fluid flow and heat transfer to support reactor design and safety
  • The application of Computerised Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes to solve nuclear reactor plant component flow.

 You will also

  • Solve thermal hydraulic problems in nuclear reactor plants to reduce uncertainty in judgement of component behaviour and safe life.
  • Evaluate and recommend the most appropriate computational and experimental methods for thermal hydraulic assessment and analysis.

 

Qualifications

Masters Degree (Level 7) in STEM Subject.

The faculty strongly supports continuing professional development and therefore upon taking up the position, you will have the opportunity to undertake a range of courses, attend conferences and build collaborations with industry and academia. If you have not already acquired professional registration, then you will also be supported in working towards Chartered status with a relevant scientific or engineering professional body. It is anticipated that any research undertaken which is not security classified may be suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals or at conferences.

The department is in HMS Sultan, Gosport, Hampshire which is the primary engineering training establishment for the Royal Navy. HMS Sultan’s on-site facilities include secure parking, gymnasium, Wardroom membership and an onsite shop. Stokes Bay beach is close by and Gosport is a short ferry ride to Portsmouth, which offers excellent facilities such as access to travel networks, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays outlet shopping.

This post in on the MOD Civilian Nuclear Post Control List (PCL) and may attract the Nuclear Recruitment and Retention Allowance (RRA). This is a discretionary allowance. The post being listed on the PCL does not mean that the post holder will have an automatic entitlement to receive the RRA. The NSQEP RRA is not a contractual allowance and can be amended or withdrawn without notice in line with MOD Main and Submarine Delivery Agency policy

The post does not offer relocation expenses.
