The Home Office Health, Safety and Wellbeing Team provides professional health and safety policy, guidance, advice, expertise and support to approximately 36,000 Home Office staff based around the globe. The variety of roles in the Home Office offers a wide variety of work much of which will need an ability to think innovatively and test normal understanding of risk and compliance.

The Health and Wellbeing Team owns and leads the Health & Wellbeing Strategy. This team works strategically to drive business improvement in wellbeing and mental health through staff champions, networks and business leads, promoting approaches including leadership capability development, stress risk assessment, education and campaigns, and evaluating impact through management information and wellbeing audits.

Job description

The successful post-holder will have a keen curiosity about strategic wellbeing and mental health, cognisant of the value of health, safety and wellbeing to the department and our valued people.

The post-holder will have a broad range of skills, together with experience of working both strategically and operationally with partners at all levels of seniority with confidence, to a high standard and with minimal supervision.

The post-holder will be a relationship-builder, comfortable with working at pace and responsibility in a challenging and sometimes fast paced environment.

They will also need to engage with and maintain a good professional relationship with the HSE, Government Internal Audit Agency and other enforcement/audit bodies.

The team is looking for a creative, innovative, analytical, efficient and service-focused self-starter with drive and good leadership skills.

Reporting to the Wellbeing Strategy Lead, the post-holder will contribute their skills and experience to the team, with a strong emphasis on partnering the business and supporting in the implementation of the wellbeing strategy.

The main functions of the role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the Health, Wellbeing Strategy Lead and the department in the promotion, maintenance, implementation, and review of the Home Office Health & Wellbeing Strategy.
  • Developing and delivering wellbeing audit and assurance activities in support of the departmental wellbeing strategy.
  • Collaborating closely with, supporting, guiding, and partnering leaders, operational wellbeing leads, staff networks and other internal and external collaborators and partners at all levels of seniority to advocate, explain, promote, support, and drive the implementation of strategic wellbeing objectives.
  • Leading, co-ordinating, and delivering wellbeing initiatives with departmental wellbeing leads and/or staff support networks.
  • Leading and delivering wellbeing projects with internal and/or external partners to agreed objectives and targets.
    The provision of strategic wellbeing & mental health support, advice to the department.
    Taking a continuous improvement approach to service delivery.
  • May be required on occasions to provide cover for planned and unplanned absences across the team.

Due to the nature of the role, this post is available on a full-time basis only and with the possibility of compressed hours.

Skills and abilities

  • Work in an environment of substantial organisational change;
  • Comprehensive theoretical understanding of audit and assurance methodology
  • Experience of leading a team and other senior partners, including collaborating with Trade Union colleagues.

Essential skills

Must have experience operating at a strategic level, in an organisation with multiple locations and activities of:

  • Managing delivery of health and wellbeing;
  • Experience delivering professional health and wellbeing services in a large and complex organisation across multiple locations;
  • Can demonstrate a strong record as an emotionally-intelligent improver and influencer with initiative;
  • Experience of working with indicators and evaluating, analysing and reporting complex data using MS Excel;
  • Has a good understanding of continuous improvement and audit principles;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and behaviours;
  • Experience delivering professional health and wellbeing services.

Desirable skills

  • Experience of common preventative and supportive mental health tools such as TriM, StRaW and/or Mental Health First Aid;
  • Hold or be willing to train towards a recognised Health and safety qualification such as the NEBOSH general certificate;
  • Experience and good solid understanding of risk and risk assessment principles and methodologies.
