The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) delivers high-impact science for the UK’s defence, security and prosperity.  In order to do this, we need self-motivated people who can apply their skills to ensure we are at the forefront of science. We work in niche areas which are sensitive in nature, operationally-critical to the UK and internationally recognised in importance.  Dstl’s Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) Division has a vacancy for a Laboratory Technician to work within the Chemistry and Operational Readiness group to support the laboratory Workplace Manager (Chemistry Laboratories) and Facility Managers to deliver safe systems of laboratory working within our high-containment laboratories.

Job description

Working as part of a highly skills and motivated team the successful applicant will be passionate about a career in the Workplace Management Team, somebody who has excellent interpersonal skills and who works well in a fast-paced goal-oriented team.   Please note that this role includes core working hours (1600-1800 Monday to Thursday) to support facility operations.  Comprehensive safety induction and training will be provided.

In this role you will:

·         Carry out general housekeeping of the various laboratories occupied and managed by Microbiology group and work on a series of self-contained tasks.

·  Undertake general microbiology tasks (in-vitro & in-vivo) as required to support to our world class scientists.

·  Support facility operations (core working hours 1600-1800 Monday to Thursday).

·  Support work during unsociable hours (e.g. in-vivo studies) including joining an out-of-hours on-call rota (which are eligible for additional payments) if required.

·  Use and maintain a variety of general laboratory equipment.

·  Support the maintenance of biological and chemical inventories for all laboratories and track and update the information using the  electronic database.

·  Ensure chemicals and consumable stock levels are maintained through regular audits and replenishing stock through use of Dstl’s standard and non-standard procurement processes.

·  Facilitate disposal of laboratory and general waste to ensure safe and timely disposal.
