Job summary

The Falkland Islands Government is committed to a long-term programme of policy and legislative reform in the area of equalities; to ensure that the Government meets its international and Constitutional obligations.  This is one of two new posts created to support effective delivery of the Programme.  The focus of the Programme will be developing policies and legislation protecting against discrimination, using a phased approach.   You will work closely alongside the Policy Adviser (Equalities) and will report to the Head of Legal Services.

Job description

Your main duties will involve undertaking legal research and providing legal advice, and supproting the folloiwng aspects of the Programme: project management, policy development, stakeholder and public engagement, strategy development, communication, production of legislative drafting instructions and draft legislation, and the production and execution of implementation plans for the relevant policies and legislation.

Person specification

You will be admitted as a solicitor or called as a barrister in a Commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland.  You will have at least three years’ post-qualifciation experience as a soliticor or barrister and a minimum of one year’s experience in advising on equalities or public law.  You will have a high level of oral and written communication skills, in particular the ability to distil and explain complexities in non-legal language.  You will be proactive, and have considerable initiative, self-motivation and the ability to work in a small team to acheive its objectives.
