Job description
At Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) we have a rare opportunity for an Operations Manager to join our United Kingdom National Codification Bureau (UKNCB) team, as a Codification Engagement Lead.
You will be leading the team who manage all business aspects of UKNCB, including customer engagement, training, Information Systems, Project Management, Risks, and business development.
You will set the direction and vision for the cross functional team and engage with other departments of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) to deliver an effective integrated and coordinated NATO codification service to Defence.
This role requires frequent travel within the UK and overseas. This includes multinational NATO codification conferences, where you will represent the United Kingdoms interests. Therefore, you must have the ability, flexibility, and willingness to travel internationally for circa 4 weeks per year for 5-day periods. Timings are usually during March, June, September, and November.
The UKNCB are a team of MOD civilian Codification specialists and are the sole authority within the UK for NATO Codification. They use, manage, and maintain the UK’s only approved NATO Codification system (NCS), the biggest and most comprehensive codification and cataloguing system in the world.
Over 60 countries are members of the NCS and its 17 million NATO stock numbers. It provides a common language of logistics, boosting the effectiveness of our armed forces, reducing costs, and facilitating both national and coalition operations.

These roles are based in our offices in central Glasgow and in-office attendance will be expected as required.

Responsibilities
- Guiding your team by setting explicit goals and directions to achieve UKNCBs objectives.
- Providing expert advice and training on NATO codification to DE&S teams and the UK MOD, creating customised support arrangements that cater to their unique needs.
- Managing your teams resources efficiently by tracking spending, projecting future requirements, and ensuring that UKNCBs support aligns with customer needs.
- Engaging proactively in NATO Codification committees (AC/135 ) to represent UK interests.
- Overseeing the Information Management and Information Technology (IMIT) team, ensuring they effectively administer the Codification Support Information System (CISIS), contribute to the NATO Data Exchange, and maintain the UKNCBs websites (intranet, public, and cabinet office) as well as the training portal.
- Leading and coordinating the UKNCB Deployable resource posts, guaranteeing representation at AC/135 meetings.
- Marketing UKNCB Codification services to both internal DE&S, MOD, and external stakeholders.
- Assessing and addressing the training needs of your team and the clients.
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:
- Holder of an in-date UK Passport, with a willingness to travel domestically internationally.
- Experience of continuous improvement and leading a team through change.
- Experience of stakeholder and relationship management, internal and external, at all levels.
- Demonstrable skills in interpreting and using management information and data.
- Evidence of delivering customer service.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams).
It would also be great if you can demonstrate any of the following desirable criteria:
- A chartered status from one of the professional bodies associated with your specialist field e.g., CMILT, MCIPS, CMgr, CEng, MAPM etc.
