Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced plant taxonomist to join the Africa Team of Kew’s Accelerated Taxonomy Department to complete the final stages of the Flora Zambesiaca project. The successful candidate will deliver high quality research on the taxonomy of the Compositae (Asteraceae) family and potentially Commelinaceae to complete the Flora accounts for these families, enabling authoritative identification of all species of these large and important families within the region. They will also provide editorial support to complete the other outstanding volume of the Flora.

Flora Zambesiaca is the definitive guide to the plant diversity of Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, the Zambezi Region (Caprivi Strip) of Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It forms the basis for a wealth of applied research on the conservation and sustainable use of plant resources across this region. The post-holder will play an essential role in seeing this important project to its completion.

Job description

We are looking for a productive, self-motivated researcher, with a meticulous eye and attention to the details and ability to meet challenging targets within a research context. Preferably the post holder has a research interest in taxonomy and nomenclature of the Compositae, as well as experience in preparing taxonomic and floristic accounts including plant descriptions of Compositae species.

Person specification

Our ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of botanical nomenclature and alpha plant taxonomy, and a basic knowledge of African plant diversity, particularly in southern tropical Africa.

This role is based at Kew with the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.
