Job description
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to evidence-based decision-making on behalf of UK Defence, by supporting the efficient migration of data from third party suppliers to DIO, leveraging technology to evaluate the quality of DIO data, and providing insightful feedback for resolution and further investigation. The role is critical in ensuring that the effective use of data is underpinned by a thorough evaluation of its quality, and that effective plans are in place for its management and capture.

Person specification
The Data Exploitation (DEx) Data team leads on the delivery of data in support of analytical projects for Defence customers. In addition, the team has a central role, providing guidance, support and governance to analysts and users across DIO.
This role offers the opportunity to drive data excellence within DIO by coordinating data migration efforts and evaluating data quality of transferred data to the organisation.
To accomplish this, the following responsibilities will be carried out:
- Familiarise self with data standards affecting data collection in DIO and participate in the advancement of these standards in collaboration with other teams – relaying emerging needs regarding standards as required.
- Share any identified issues found during data migration, or integration assessments, which may need wider input / support, or further monitoring.
- Ensure smooth migration of data to DIO, preserving data integrity and understanding.
- Collaborate with DIO stakeholders to identify opportunities to enhance data collection.
- Network with professionals across DIO, other government agencies, and the data analytics community to foster knowledge sharing and idea exchange.
You will be supported in your role, and benefit through targeted training, and mentorship from the wider team to up-skill you. We ultimately strive to ensure you have the skills and the confidence you need to operate with a degree of freedom.
This role requires the ability to think through alternate solutions to the status quo and question whether we are as efficient and effective as possible. We recognise that this is dependent upon a clear understanding of DIO operations and procedures, as well as the knowledge of technologies available to provide alternative solutions. It will take time, and a desire to explore and learn about the organisation is essential to being successful in the role.
This post currently has no direct line management responsibilities, however there will be many opportunities to support colleagues and engage in a range of leadership activities.
Desirable Experience & Skills
Experience using any of the following is desirable but not essential:
- Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) (either Procedural Language (PL) SQL, or Transact SQL) or a desire to work towards gaining the skills and knowledge.
- Strong familiarity with Microsoft Excel : formulas, pivot tables, power queries etc. or a desire to work towards qualifications to gain these skills

We want to offer opportunities to all who are successful at interview for our roles, but this isn’t always possible, so we do hold candidates on an active reserve list for 12 months. It is also possible that we may offer similar lower graded role/s to reserve candidates or, if no reserves are appointed, candidates that meet the lower grade criteria in merit order.
