Training typically lasts between 1 – 1.5 years but there is not a set time for this. Allowances and Salary will be pro-rata for part-time staff.

Job description

No two days are the same for our Marine Surveyors. You could be inspecting a ship in Hull ensuring its meeting UK and International Regulations one day, working from home the next, and assessing oral examinations for seafarers the day after.

We have a number of Marine Surveyor positions available in the Engineer, Naval Architect, Nautical and Ship Surveyor disciplines. Please see the Role Profiles attached below for further information about the responsibilities associated with each role, and apply on the appropriate campaign.

Person specification

Some of the typical responsibilities could include, but are not limited to:

  • Inspecting, auditing and surveying ships and maritime ship operators to safeguard that they meet UK, EU and international safety, management, welfare, security and anti-pollution regulations. Carrying out approval of stability information where qualified to do so. When qualified as a Nautical Examiner, undertaking oral examinations so as to ensure high standards of training and competence amongst seafarers
  • Carrying out safety management audits in straightforward and routine cases under the International Safety Management (ISM) code of ship operators and their vessels for ISM Document of Compliance (DOC) & ISM Safety Management Certificate (SMC)
  • Carrying out inspections of ships and port installations in straightforward and routine cases to ensure compliance with International Conventions, EU legislation and UK statutory requirements
  • As a qualified Port State Control Officer (PSCO) helping fulfil UK obligations under the Paris MOU Agreement and EU Port State Control Directive in the inspection of foreign registered ships calling at UK ports

You are an experienced Maritime Professional who holds the appropriate qualification as detailed in this advert.

You have proven customer service skills and can make quick, effective decisions, that are always focused on achieving the best outcomes. You are resilient, flexible and able to manage a varied workload with competing priorities. You have excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively build relationships with a variety of stakeholders across different cultures and industries. Please note, due to the nature of the role you will also be required to undergo a Counter-Terrorist Check (CTC) before commencing employment with us. Gaining CTC Clearance will normally require you to have been a resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years, and only candidates who meet this requirement will be considered for the role. You will also be required to pass a medical – the health standards are attached to this advert.

Important Information

On occasion, there will be a requirement to work outside of ‘normal hours’.

You will be required to work and travel on official duty within the UK and short term visits overseas or offshore, which may involve overnight stays away from home.

Licences

A full driving licence for driving in the UK and a passport valid for international travel are required.

Qualifications

Nautical Discipline – The minimum academic qualification required is one of: Nautical Surveyor: MCA Recognised STCW II/2 Master unlimited Certificate of Competency. MCA Recognised means certificates issued by a country whose seafarer training is recognised by the UK. A list of those countries can found on our website at www.gov.uk and search MCA CEC. (Those without UK issued STCW Certificates of Competency will need to complete UK LAP training at an early stage after entry).

If your application meets the requirements of the role you will be invited to the next part of the recruitment process which is a two stage interview process.

The first stage consists of a short initial video interview where we will assess your technical knowledge. Further information will be provided if you are invited to this online interview. If you are successful after the 1st stage, you will then be invited to a 2nd stage/final assessment which will involve a role play. Both stages are planned to be conducted via teams.

The sift is due to take place 15th and 16th August 2023.

The first stage of interviews are likely to be held from week commencing 28th August 2023.

Final assessments are likely to be held from week commencing 11th September 2023.

We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert. There may be occasions when these dates will change. You will be provided with sufficient notice of the confirmed dates.

The selection process will be designed specifically for the role. As a result, your assessment will include:

  • An interview
  • A role play exercise
