Job summary

We are looking for a collaborative, and proactive Senior Executive Officer to lead the development of the UKs’ marine engineering supply chain and support the wider work of the National Shipbuilding Strategy. This is a key leadership role within the maritime team with a geographical regional mandate as well as leading on supply chain globally. The civil maritime team sits with Department for Business & Trade’s UK Defence and Security Exports Directorate (UKDSE) but is focused on commercial work. 

The marine engineering and manufacturing industry contributes around £10bn to the economy and supports over 5,000 businesses across the UK and some 90,000 jobs across leisure, commercial shipping, offshore energy, and naval markets. This sector has a strong appetite for exporting and we are looking for someone to make a mark in this area with a propensity for international trade. 

The role will involve leading work on priority export campaigns, collaborating closely with the other members of the team and colleagues in our key markets (especially Asia) to ensure that the UK export offer is conveyed as clearly as possible to buyers in-market. There will be a requirement to develop effective campaign strategies, to account manage companies, to work with individual companies in specific markets and for both UK and international travel. It will also involve engagement with other government departments, trade bodies and relevant stakeholders.

Job description

On a day-to-day basis the postholder will:  

  • Provide support to UK companies looking to export and overseas investors to choose the UK. 
  • Contribute to the delivery of inward and outward missions, (whether virtual or otherwise) the development of collateral and support on the delivery of key events. 
  • Research and identify export opportunities for UK companies in some specific geographical regions for which the candidate will have a direct responsibility. This is currently for markets in North East Asia (Republic of Korea and Japan) and China. 
  • Work to build links across DBT and wider government to share best practise and consistency of approach.  
  • Contribute to the teams’ relationship with the wider DBT network, developing strong and effective relationships to deliver on both team’s agenda.  
  • There will be an opportunity for UK and some overseas travel. The position offers flexibility to meet development needs across the range of behaviours required from the role. 
  • There will also be an opportunity to take on corporate responsibilities within the team, for example: creating marketing collateral in collaboration with our marketing team and building capability within the team about trade policy matters. 

There will be a need to account for delivery within set budgetary limits, so some oversight of budgetary work will be part of the role.  

The Senior Maritime Engineering Supply Chain Manager will report to the G7 team leader and Head of Exports. This role provides an essential function supporting successful maritime export campaigns to deliver against agreed criteria and HMG objectives. It will also involve engagement with businesses, trade bodies and relevant stakeholders.

Essential Criteria 

  • The candidate will be required to hold or be in a position to apply and gain SC security Clearance. 

Desirable Criteria  

  • Good understanding of UK maritime technology companies and capabilities. 
  • Existing network of contacts in the UK maritime industry. 
  • Knowledge and experience of working with HMG departments, and its role in supporting defence exports.
  • Some understanding of current HMG trade policy and strategy.
