We’re looking for an exceptional Engineer to join our Systems Engineering Team to help us make a difference to our planet by integrating environmental observation sensors and systems.

Job description

As our Engineer, you will work mainly from our workshop at Exeter HQ. This is a role involving field work as well as preparation time in the workshop, sometimes for up to 5 days per week. Hybrid working from a remote location may also be possible for administrative tasks. Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week.

Job Purpose

Joining our Systems Engineering Team as an Engineer, you’ll be key to helping us evolve, by integrating environmental observation sensors and systems. You will support the development and lifecycle management of our land-based weather observing sensors, systems and networks. Working alongside our Research and Development (R&D) teams, you’ll help to prepare the systems for operational use.

Your key responsibilities are:

  • To deliver work plans, which improve Met Office systems and products and provide advice and services for the benefit of customers
  • To develop work plans for discrete areas, including identification of improvements to systems, capabilities and/or process
  • To generate and present documentation and reports internally and externally
  • To mentor and provide engineering advice to other team members to improve the effectiveness of the team.
  • To carry out continuing professional development in line with current and future needs of the Met Office.

Person specification

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
  1. Demonstrable experience of being an expert by nature, providing proactive engineering and technical insight into the solving of hardware and software tasks or problems.
  2. Possess a valid UK driving licence and be prepared to drive officially provided pool vehicles; Colour Perception CP2 or better is required to drive vehicles on airports or ports.
  3. Evidence of working better together with colleagues and/or wider stakeholders to understand the requirements for your work and contribute to the development of plans to meet these requirements.
  4. Examples of applying good Quality Assurance processes, best practice, standards and/or regulations to all aspects of your work to achieve the agreed standard.
  5. Evidence of accurate and concise communication with colleagues and/or wider stakeholders to develop trust and credibility, tailoring your method of sharing to a range of audiences.
  6. Demonstrable skills showing proactive provision of support to others to develop their skills leading to beneficial impacts.
  7. Evidence of understanding the wider context of capabilities and needs in the area of which your work is a part, and applying this knowledge to suggest how your work could influence future development of application of capabilities in your team or beyond.
Alongside your salary of £32,100, Met Office contributes
£8,667 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

As our Engineer, your starting salary will be £32100.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £33,559.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £36,000.00 over time.

In addition:

  • You will be paid £3,000.00 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay.
  • Relocation Assistance may be available.

Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £44,696.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.
