Job description
As our Senior Engineer, you will work mainly from our workshop at Exeter HQ. This is a role involving field work as well as preparation time in the workshop, sometimes for up to 5 days per week. Hybrid working from a remote location may also be possible for administrative tasks. Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week.

Job Purpose
Joining our Systems Engineering Team as a Senior Engineer, you’ll be key to helping us evolve, by integrating environmental observation sensors and systems. You will support the development and lifecycle management of our land-based weather observing sensors, systems and networks. Working alongside our Research and Development (R&D) teams, you’ll help to prepare the systems for operational use.
Your key responsibilities are:

To lead and influence the development of work plans, including identification of improvements to systems, capabilities and/or process.

To use existing and emerging engineering practice to lead the delivery of work plans, which improve Met Office systems and products and provide advice and services for the benefit of customers.

To lead and manage the generation and presentation of documentation and reports internally and externally in order to meet the needs of the customer and Met Office including; maintaining capability, integrity, standards; and/or communicating advice and knowledge and/or promoting reputation.

To lead and provide engineering advice to other team members to improve the effectiveness and manage resources of the team.

To carry out continuing professional development in line with current and future needs of the Met Office.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
- Evidence that you keep evolving by delivering and evaluating meaningful advances in capability for colleagues and/or stakeholders through the effective application of deep and/or broad engineering and/or technical knowledge, understanding and skills.
- Possess a valid UK driving licence and be prepared to drive officially provided pool vehicles; Colour Perception CP2 or better is required to drive vehicles on airports or ports.
- Demonstrable experience of proficiently providing deep and/or broad engineering and technical insight into the solving of hardware and software tasks or problems.
- Evidence of working better together by engaging with internal and/or external teams to understand the requirements for your work and significantly contribute to the development and evaluation of plans to meet these requirements.
- Examples of applying, promoting and supporting good Quality Assurance processes, best practice, standards and/or regulations in both yours and others work to ensure agreed standards are maintained.
- Evidence of being an expert by nature through communicating engineering and/or technical knowledge accurately, concisely and in the most appropriate way in a range of situations to increase the impact of your work and enhance the Met Office’s reputation.
- Demonstrable skills in supporting others in the development of their engineering, technical or software engineering skills and/or career development leading to improved output from those being developed.
- Understanding the wider context of capabilities and needs in the area of which your work is part and applying this knowledge to help inform strategic planning in your area or beyond.

As our Senior Engineer, your starting salary will be £38838.00. New joiners to the Met Office will start on the salary band minimum. Our 2022-25 pay award means the salary will increase to £41,725.00 from 1st April 2024, and you will be able to progress towards £45,257.00 over time.
In addition:
- You will be paid £4,000.00 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2022 until March 2024 in your monthly pay.
- Relocation Assistance may be available.
Your total reward package is potentially worth up to £53,757.00 annually, which includes basic salary, potential corporate bonus and employer pension contributions.
