Introduction

Do you want to help transform the way UKHSA understands the quality of its data? We are looking for a senior data analyst who can build on our data quality work. You will design data quality assessments, working with a wide range of people across the organisation to understand what they need from their data. You will establish quality expectations on centralised assets, working closely with data engineers to ensure that those assets are fit for purpose.

At the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) our mission is to provide health security for the nation by protecting from infectious disease and external hazards.  We are a trusted source of advice to government and to the public, focusing on reducing inequalities in the way different communities experience and are impacted by infectious disease, environmental hazards, and other threats to health.

Our mission is challenging, innovative and in the spotlight. We will work to ensure our people have the diverse skills, experiences, and backgrounds we need to thrive, that our employees are representative of the communities we serve and feel valued and enabled to play their part in delivering our work.

Job Overview

You will join the Data Quality Delivery team within Engineering and Enablement as we establish a comprehensive, user-focused approach to data quality assessments in UKHSA.

You will be responsible for working with data owners and users to build an understanding of their expectations of data quality, turning these into designs for data quality assessments that focus on the most important aspects of data. You will ensure assessments reflect the needs of users and communicate the quality of data clearly and effectively.

You will work closely with data quality engineers to create user-focused data quality assessments that provide actionable insight to the organisation.

You will ensure that the analysis of quality demonstrates whether the data supports organisational delivery, establishing the value that good quality data can bring to the organisation.

Working with others across the organisation you will embrace innovative approaches to deliver, help to embed good practice in other teams, and mature the organisation’s approaches to data quality.

This role offers the opportunity to help improve data quality analysis in UKHSA and engage with people in a wide range of roles across the organisation, including with data owners, data users and data policy teams.

Job description

This role involves helping people across the UKHSA to understand the quality of their data, working with data owners to understand the root cause of problems, and advising on actions to take to improve quality. You will help data owners and their teams to understand the impacts of poor quality data and the importance of having data that is fit for purpose. You will work with people across the organisation to analyse the quality of data, communicating your findings in an engaging and impactful way that influences data owners, users and senior leaders.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Designing data quality assessments that reflect the varying needs of data owners and users in UKHSA
  • Carrying out data profiling to establish the quality composition of critical datasets
  • Identifying core data quality measurements across multiple datasets that reflect the strategic value of data assets to UKHSA.
  • Assessing and communicating data quality in innovative ways, considering conflicting priorities and expectations of quality.
  • Helping data owners to identify the root causes of issues and recommending actions to address them.
  • Creating guidance to support others in applying good data quality practice.
  • Working with data quality engineers on a programme of data quality work.
  • Building strong relationships with other data analysts across UKHSA to spread good practice in data quality.
