The Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) is a part of the Ministry of Defence responsible for the procurement, in-service support, and disposal of the UK’s nuclear submarines. Job description

Are you looking for a challenging and rewarding career in the defence industry? Do you have the skills, experience and passion to support a tri-national, conventionally armed nuclear-powered submarine? If so, we’re looking for a Lead Engineer to join our SDA AUKUS team at MOD Abbey Wood, Bristol.  

The defence partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States (AUKUS), will see the first generation of AUKUS nuclear submarines built in the UK equipped for intelligence, surveillance, undersea warfare and strike missions. The aim is to successfully develop and demonstrate a range of underwater capabilities that are crucial to ensuring safety and security in the region and more broadly.  

You will be working across three time zones including Australia, United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK) and as such attracts night allowances. You will also have the opportunity to travel to other submarine establishments across the UK and overseas travel on occasion. Please note, applicants should live within commuting distance of Filton, Bristol as this job requires to be onsite a minimum of two days per week.

Due to security, this role is reserved for sole UK nationals or Dual UK nationals limited to Australian and US and you will be required to undertake Developed Vetting clearance once in the post.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with US and Australian peers on defining AUKUS technical authority and engineering requirements
  • Support the development of the technical options to meet the AUKUS production and transportation requirements
  • Work with the trilateral Working Groups to take forward technical and engineering work packages
  • Liaising with SDA teams, namely Submersible Ship (Nuclear) (SSN) AUKUS, to develop how the current capability and technical insertion capability
  • Support the development of Regulatory, Safety and Environmental aspects, focused on nuclear submarine requirements

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Relevant Level 6 (Degree or higher) qualification or equivalent experience
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience
  • Expertise in a maritime submarine acquisition and in-service organisation
  • Experience interfacing with international programmes

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
