Never has there been a more important time for trees and forests to help tackle the climate emergency and provide a much-needed sanctuary for people and wildlife. Our government are committed to trebling woodland creation rates across the UK by the end of this Parliament. This acceleration in current planting rates in England will contribute to meeting the net-zero by 2050 ambitions and governments wider environmental targets.
The Forestry Commission is working together with the Department for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) to support the forestry sector, landowners, farmers, stakeholders and communities in the delivery of these ambitions. This role sits within the Marketing, Communications and Engagement team which aims to raise awareness of trees and woodlands, boost external engagement, and drive behaviour change amongst target audiences.
Job description
The purpose of the role is to lead national support of regional Marketing, Communications & Engagement (MC&E) activity, deliver operational communications plans, manage email marketing, and coordinate any media opportunities.
Key Work Areas
You will:
Regional MC&E implementation
- Manage regional MC&E implementation support from within the national team, working closely with Area Marketing & Communications Managers and Engagement Officers on tailored activity in line with regional plans. This will include email creation and deployment, regional campaign roll-out, and new content creation (working closely with Content team)
- Lead on national projects for regional implementation, to create and enhance MC&E opportunities with our audiences
- Manage multiple regional projects from a national perspective to ensure a consistent approach to promotion and engagement activities across our five regional teams
- Collaborate with regional teams to establish strong relationships and ensure effective coordination of project activities
- Act as point of escalation for regional Mailchimp activity and oversee regional templates.
- Ensure cross-Area awareness and alignment with developing MC&E activity, to allow for sharing of ideas and avoid reinventing the wheel
- Identify opportunities to enhance MC&E activity across regions, by staying up-to-date with area implementation plans and latest market/industry trends
- Support regional teams with ad hoc tasks and projects as required
- Work with external suppliers to deliver high quality goods and services
- Ensure relevant national resources are available to Area teams
- Monitor and report on MC&E activity, communicating results and recommendations to key internal stakeholders
Email marketing
- Oversee and lead all Mailchimp activity for Forest Services, including managing national ealerts and overseeing regional activity including monthly newsletters.
- Manage email template creation and maintenance
- Take responsibility for integration of Mailchimp into CRM system on an ongoing basis.
- Conduct regular email marketing monitoring and evaluation activities to track performance, including reviewing data, preparing reports, and analysing results against established objectives and peer performance
Operational Comms
- Manage external operational communications to customers about grants, regulations and other announcements in line with agreed comms plans, working closely with the wider Marketing & Comms team and Defra Comms team.
Media
- Attend weekly Defra media meeting and pass opportunities or updates through to the wider team
- Highlight any regional media opportunities that may be nationally relevant to the Defra Comms team
- Work with regional teams on good news stories, and support as needed to publish (whether regionally or nationally)
Person specification
ESSENTIAL
- Experience of full breadth of marketing activities and channels
- Experience of using email marketing tools to execute campaigns to drive engagement, including coordinating email development, audience segmentation, testing, and analytics
- Experience of defining and tailoring promotional activities for a range of audiences
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain effective working relationships
- Team player
- Highly organised, with a high level of attention to detail
- Ability to prioritise
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Competent with Microsoft Office

This is a Temporary Appointment until 31st March 2025 with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.
