The Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre, based at UKHSA Porton, is based in a new world-class research facility dedicated to the development and testing of new vaccines and therapeutics for COVID-19 and other emerging health security threats. Home to ground-breaking new technology vital for tackling both COVID-19 and a broad range of emerging health security threats, the facility houses new equipment which will improve the speed and capacity to evaluate vaccines. The facility aims to reduce the potential risks from COVID-19 variants of concern and other infectious disease health threats as they arise.
As a Sample Manager, you will be responsible for supervising a team of technicians to deliver all sample management activities within the Clinical Evaluation Team. The post holder will be expected to be flexible and adaptable to the demands of the project and have strong written and verbal communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, and a proactive approach to solving problems. This post would suit a candidate with proven experience in a similar environment, including working in a regulated (i.e., GxP) environment. Experience of supervising and training others and understanding/experience of LIMS is desirable.

Responsibilities section:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Supporting the Project Team Leader to implement and deliver utilize all sample management activities (receipt, processing, inventories, provision for testing, return) associated with the clinical evaluation team aimed to ensure project targets are met.
- Work to Good Clinical Practice, follow standard operating procedures and record information accurately.
- Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for the sample management operations.
- Take responsibility for supervising and maintenance of equipment and facilities as required by project team.
- Take responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the team as required.
- Ensure accurate inventories, tracking of samples and laboratory records.
- Assist the Project Team Leader to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the sample management area operates to a high-quality and scientific standard.
- Assist the Project Team Leader in troubleshooting any investigations and implement recommended actions.
- Assist the Project Team Leader and team management in any internal or external audits and implement recommended actions.
- To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.

Essential Criteria:

Essential
- Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience working at a similar level in a specialist area
- Demonstratable practical experience in the management of clinical samples.
- Excellent understanding and experience of safe working practices in a containment level 2 laboratory.
- Experience of delivering duties to meet team objectives within set timelines.
- Experience and/or understanding of working in a regulated environment.
- Experience of lab management /supervision
Desirable

- Experience in producing and maintaining accurate documentation and databases.

STAGE 1 – APPLICATION & SIFT:

STAGE 2 INTERVIEW
This competition will involve a face-to-face interview..
As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.
Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).
You will also be asked to provide information within the Employer/ Activity history section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
