Job summary

We are looking for a talented and proactive person to join DBT’s Strategy Unit, a team sitting at the heart of the organisation, to lead on cross-cutting portfolios of work.  You will work closely with Ministers, senior managers, and officials within the department to set and deliver the department’s priorities and objectives. You’ll join a supportive team who will give you the right tools and training to succeed and help you to develop your career further.   

We are recruiting for a Senior Strategy Adviser in the Strategy Unit to lead and drive forward cross-government priorities. The successful candidate will support the department’s priorities across a number of areas from engaging with cross-government strategies, delivering cross-cutting priorities, briefing Ministers and the Secretary of State, driving long-term strategic planning for the department, for example drafting corporate strategy (Outcome Delivery Plan – ODP) or supporting major fiscal events (Autumn Statement).  There may be line management responsibilities and opportunities for matrix managing.

You might also work flexibly across the Strategy Unit’s remit – articulating DBT’s input to cross-government strategies; supporting other cross-cutting priorities such as devolution; and driving long-term strategic planning for the department. Job description

You will work as part of a dynamic and motivated team to deliver exciting and varied work, such as:   

  • Leading on the coordination of cross-cutting briefing requests for the Secretary of State’s cabinet briefings.  
  • Leading and developing weekly packs for the Secretary of State, Permanent Secretary and Executive Committee 
  • Lead preparations and develop a Spending Review strategy for the Department to maximise funding for DBT’s objectives.
  • Leading on briefings for senior officials, the Permanent Secretary, Ministers and the Secretary of State. 
  • Developing the department’s strategic approach to emerging issues and wider Government priorities; and that these priorities reflect the importance of business, international trade and investment to the UK economy.
  • Proactively lead portfolios of work, delegating and project managing tasks where appropriate and driving forward strategic priority workstreams on specific areas of the Department.

Essential Criteria 

We are looking for someone who has:   

  • Excellent briefing and communication skills, both written and oral. 
  • Proactive skills and a self-starter who can lead on work independently as well as collaboratively in teams.
  • Excellent judgement and analytical skills in order to develop strategy and deliver policy outcomes. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with people at all levels within the department and across Whitehall. 
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your work.  
  • The ability to think critically, analyse the options and connect the dots to develop strategy, building consensus with internal and external partners.

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
