Job description

To succeed in this role, you will be proactive and detail oriented, with the ability to work flexibly, focusing efforts and resources on priority activities as required. You will play a critical role in the successful management and delivery of DDaT’s project management work.

You will have the opportunity to work in a fast paced and changing environment, helping to develop DDaT’s PMO function and to ensure the successful delivery of critical projects.

PMO specialists within DDaT align to the Project Delivery profession, for Project Delivery professionals in Government.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office, subject to local estates capacity, by Spring 2024. Person specification

Your main day to day responsibilities will include:

  • Leading on and defining the delivery of effective governance processes throughout your portfolio, providing the first line of project assurance; arranging external reviews at appropriate points in the project lifecycle, and ensuring recommendations are actioned by project teams.
  • Understanding and communicating the organisation’s governance pathways – driving appropriate use of boards and build governance into the project cycle. Analysis and challenge of data in the reports. Presenting reports at relevant boards.
  • Working with stakeholders to agree a governance and reporting structure. Setting up project boards, ensuring all relevant stakeholders are represented.
  • Leading the PMO to support project teams in their delivery and achievement of Business Case benefits and outcomes.
  • Establishing project controls to track project delivery, reporting on project progress and status to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Supervising the establishment of processes and standards for managing risks and issues within projects, working closely with the Senior Risks & Issues Manager as part of this. Ensuring items are escalated to the appropriate stakeholders and boards as required.

You will also be expected to carry out the following day to day activities:

  • Supporting Project Managers in the development of their Business Cases, ensuring input from specialists is included as necessary.
  • Providing direction and guidance to the PMO team and championing the use of best practice project management methodologies, standards, and processes.
  • Managing the PMO team and supporting the Project Managers in the identification and deployment of resources throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Liaising with a broad range of key stakeholders across the project delivery environment and advising the project team on appropriate techniques for managing these relationships.

Essential criteria

You’ll have a passion for PMO with the following skills or proven experience in:

  • Working in a PMO environment and implementing best practice frameworks within which large scale projects and programmes were delivered.
  • Demonstrating expertise in core PMO functions such as planning, resource management, benefits management, risk management and governance and reporting.
  • Building, and maintaining, strong relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communication skills, being able to tailor your approach to suit the audience and situation.
  • Managing, analysing and interpreting data, creating digestible and actionable reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrating strong team leadership skills, maintaining engagement with stakeholders and influencing others.

Desirable criteria

Ideally you will also have the following skills or some experience in:

  • Understanding different methodologies used in project delivery environments, such as Waterfall and Agile.
  • Demonstrating experience of large-scale project delivery in government environments.
