About the role:

Do you have an interest in the biological sciences, have experience in broad system-wide thinking, and recognise the value of monitoring and evidencing progress towards long-term organisational objectives? If so, this is an exciting opportunity to join BBSRC’s Strategic Planning, Evidence and Engagement Domain (SPEE) as a Senior Manager.

The Strategy and Planning team works with colleagues across the organisation and externally, to coordinate the development of BBSRC’s strategic objectives and priorities, and to monitor progress against these. This involves working closely with strategy teams, planning leads and business partners within BBSRC and with counterparts in other parts of UKRI, as well as engagement with external partners and stakeholders. 

Job description

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing, coordinating and managing BBSRC’s annual strategic planning and performance reporting cycle, working closely with strategy and operations teams across BBSRC. 
  • Coordinating the development and updating of BBSRC’s Strategic Delivery Plan, for approval by BBSRC Executive and UKRI Board. 
  • Coordinating BBSRC’s engagement with UKRI’s Performance Framework and ensuring the BBSRC contributes appropriately to the various performance products (Balanced Scorecard, Quarterly reports, Annual Report and Accounts) 
  • Supporting strategic engagement (e.g. workshops, webinars) to inform development of BBSRC’s strategy and priorities 
  • Supporting the preparation of BBSRC’s input to government Spending Reviews, UKRI budget allocations processes and, where relevant, cross-cutting UKRI funds, working with BBSRC senior teams, BBSRC Council and UKRI colleagues. 
  • Maintaining an awareness of internal and external strategies and policies that are relevant to, or may impact on, BBSRC’s strategy and planning. 

Person specification

Skills and requirements:

  • graduate level of education in a biological or related science subject, and/or equivalent relevant experience 
  • experience of managing or supporting organisational strategic planning and / or performance monitoring 
  • ability to plan and prioritise a varied workload to ensure that work meets deadlines, and be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and demands 
  • excellent interpersonal skills, able to deal tactfully and diplomatically with people at all levels, and to establish and maintain good working relationships within BBSRC and across professional networks 
  • effective analytical skills; ability to commission, interpret, connect, synthesise and summarise information from a range of sources to identify key themes and opportunities 
  • able to think and work creatively to tackle problems and challenges, demonstrating own initiative and judgement within given constraints and asking for and giving help when needed 
  • excellent written and oral communication skills with good attention to detail; ability to develop and deliver well-structured and clearly-articulated documents and presentations for internal and external audiences 
Alongside your salary of £43,116, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council contributes
£11,641 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.
