Job description

This is an exciting time to join the Border Force Corporate Affairs and Secretariat Unit (CASU), working in the corporate centre of the organisation on a diverse and dynamic portfolio.  We contribute to some of the most fundamental issues under consideration across Border Force, Home Office and wider government. CASU sits within the Director General’s Office and reports directly to the Chief of Staff.

This is a high-profile position that is fast paced, challenging and highly rewarding. You will be exposed to the diverse range of work carried out across Border Force, as well as engagement with Senior Leaders and other departments in the Home Office.

CASU provides cross-cutting support to Border Force and the Director General on issues such as media queries, Parliamentary Questions, Parliamentary correspondence and Freedom of Information requests, corporate issues/events, official visits and governance arrangements.

Please note that because of the nature of this role, not all working patterns can be accommodated. A part-time working pattern of less than 0.8 (equivalent of four working days), for example, is unlikely to be accommodated. The role does not involve working unsociable hours. Person specification

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the team. You can expect to carry out a range of tasks within the team’s portfolio. These tasks will include, but not be limited to:

  • Organising and facilitating official visits and corporate events for the organisation.
  • Coordinating agendas, papers and meetings for the organisation’s highest decision-making boards and forums.
  • Triaging and managing emails sent to the team’s mailbox, tracking workflow, actioning, and monitoring commissions and escalating to seniors when required.
  • Drafting correspondence on behalf of the Director General and other senior officials and Ministers.
  • Regional engagement, including Private Offices and Senior Leaders.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with other offices (Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, other Senior Officials) and other key partners in Border Force, the Home Office and other Government Departments.

This is a non-uniformed role but there may be occasions uniform is required when accompanying the Director General or for other official events. 

Essential Criteria

  • Exceptional written communication and presentation skills, with the ability to provide the relevant information accurately and effectively communicating the outcome.
  • Excellent partner management skills, liaising confidently with seniors and pushing back when necessary
  • Strong organisational skills with proven ability to manage, plan, and prioritise task and workload to meet deadlines whilst maintaining attention to detail and without compromising the quality of the work.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and working under pressure.

Desirable Criteria

  • Strong IT skills, in particular Excel, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.

Selection process details

This gives us the best possible chance of finding the right person for the job, drives up performance and improves diversity and inclusivity.

As part of the application process, you will first be asked to confirm your eligibility by providing some basic personal information. 

After submission of this first stage, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Work Strengths Test. If you successfully pass this test, you will then be invited to complete the full application form. Please complete the online test as soon as possible (within 24-48 hours is recommended), the closing date for the test and full application form is 23:55 on 16th August 2023. The sift will be held on the behaviour Delivering at Pace and the statement of suitability (personal statement). The CV will not be scored.

However, if a large number of applications are received, the sift will be conducted on the statement of suitability (personal statement) only.  

The statement of suitability will be scored first for all candidates. Those candidates who achieve the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability, will progress to a further sift where the lead behaviour (Delivering at Pace) will be scored. These candidates will therefore receive a sift score for both elements. Candidates who fail to meet the minimum pass score for the statement of suitability will not have their lead behaviour scored and will therefore only receive a sift score for the statement of suitability.

Appearance

There may be occasions you are required to where a uniform, such as  when accompanying the Director General or for other official events. This will be provided. Staff must ensure that their uniform is worn correctly, in line with these uniform standards, is kept clean and is well presented. To support this requirement, adequate uniform supplies will be available and issued. Uniformed staff represent their organisation at all times and should ensure that their dress and personal appearance reflects this responsibility.

Tattoos, including henna

A non-offensive visible tattoo is permissible, as long as it is not on the face or on the front or side of the neck (above the collar line). Tattoos behind the ear lobe on the back of the neck are also acceptable within these policy guidelines. You will be required to cover tattoos, when it is seen as appropriate for certain official events, e.g. State Funerals, Opening of Parliament, Remembrance Parades and other Ceremonial events. Under no circumstances should tattoos which could be considered offensive be visible. Examples of these include discriminatory; offensive; undermine political neutrality i.e. rude, lewd, crude, racist, sexist, sectarian, homophobic or violent tattoos.

Hybrid working

Hybrid working enables employees to work partly in their workplace(s) and partly at home.  A hybrid working pattern may be available, where business needs allow. Applicants can discuss what this means with the vacancy holder if they have specific question.

A reserve list may be held for a period up to 12 months from which further appointment may be made.
