The new Investment Directorate aims to deliver economic growth to all nations and regions of the UK through attracting and retaining inward investment. Our three divisions – Investor Relations; Investment Opportunities and Propositions; Strategy, Environment, Planning & Policy – deliver expert advice and support to investors, identify and promote strategically important investment opportunities, enhance the competitiveness of the UK business environment, build world class investment capability across DBT, and lead the implementation and management of DBT’s Investment Strategy.

This is an exciting opportunity for 2 new SEOs to join the Venture Capital Unit that is responsible for attracting overseas corporate and venture capital investors to further their relationship with the UK, and at the same time support UK companies seeking to raise capital.

This is a unique opportunity to be leading on identifying UK companies that are attractive to international investors and supporting investor facing events. You will be required to work across Whitehall on driving the value of international venture, prepare briefings for senior colleagues and ministers and sectoral guidance to the team.

The team consists of G6 (0.6 FTE), G7 x 2, SEO and HEO plus four private sector specialists covering Life Sciences, Venture and Startups, Corporate Venture Capital and Venture Capital Funds.

Job description

Both roles will require a combination of the following:

  • Lead in developing lookbooks which are portfolios of companies that seeking investment in a given sector as well as organising several events for companies and investors.
  • Lead in the organisation of investor facing showcase events, investor visits and other ad hoc events both in the UK and key overseas markets.
  • Engagement with other Government Departments and the development and maturation of working relationships to ensure that all Government efforts in pursuit of the vision are co-ordinated.
  • Engage with a range of external intermediaries, such as Innovate UK, IP Group, Tech Nation and accelerators / incubators across the UK.
  • Assist with corporate tasks including data hub updates, preparing for the VC board meetings, drafting monthly newsletters, managing specialists contracts.
  • Assist in the development of other outputs such as briefings and submissions. 

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Person specification

Essential Criteria 

  • Be a clear communicator and able to build effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to deliver against a broad set of strategic objectives.
  •  The ability to work at pace in a complex cross-departmental environment, providing momentum to support the delivery of the Department’s objectives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to draft effective ministerial briefings and presenting confidently to a range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • You will have good attention to detail and be able to operate independently to deliver a high-quality service at pace.

Desirable Criteria  

  • A background in marketing and/or investment promotion with an understanding of venture capital, inward investment, international investors.
  • Capable IT skills, intermediate to advanced user of the Microsoft Office Suite – Excel, SharePoint, MS Teams, PowerPoint, Word.
  • Comfortable using different digital products, with the ability to present information in an effective manner to report to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience of project management and delivery.
