Diverse Perspectives and experiences are critical to our success, and we welcome applications from all people from all backgrounds with the experience and skills needed to perform this role. We look forward to receiving your application.

The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. As such, we run a Disability Confident Scheme (DCS) for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria.

Like many government departments, HSE has a Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). HSE’s CSA works together with other departmental CSAs under the leadership of the Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) to ensure that decisions within and across Departments are informed by the best science, engineering and analysis (SEA) advice.

HSE’s CSA is also HSE’s Director of Science and Head of Science and Engineering Profession (HoSEP):

  • providing leadership for the prioritisation strategic/business needs for science, engineering and analysis within appropriate governance arrangements, and;
  • building support and championing the science, engineering and analysis community within HSE.

These responsibilities are led and delivered through the Chief Scientific Adviser’s Office (CSAO).

Job description

There are a number of activities which need to be maintained to support the Director of Science, CSA and HoSEP functions in relation to HSE’s science governance (ensuring we identify and prioritise strategic/business needs for science and evidence to meet HSE’s needs) and to support and champion the science, engineering and analysis community within HSE.

The CSA Support Officer post will provide support to HSE’s research governance processes and the dissemination of science, engineering and analysis to internal and external audiences.

Additionally, the post will support the Head of Science and Engineering Profession in developing the science, engineering and analysis community across HSE and building the capability of our membership.

The post provides an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to gain insight into how the Chief Scientific Adviser’s Office works in respect to other government departments, the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and the Government Office for Science. It is a fast paced and exciting environment, with exposure to senior stakeholders and insight into the high profile issues addressed by the CSA.

At HSE, we are proud to be able to offer our people the opportunity to work in a hybrid way which combines working from home and the office. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your allocated office will be your contractual place of work. There will be a requirement to travel to the office for various activities e.g., collaborative working, supporting and training colleagues. If hybrid working is suitable for you and your role, the arrangements will be determined primarily by business need, but personal circumstances and other relevant circumstances will also be taken into account. Therefore, we would encourage candidates to consider if the commute from home to the office is a feasible distance to travel before making an application. Please note that if you are successful, hybrid working will be discussed prior to taking up the post.

Part time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 30 hours per week.
