About Us
The role will sit within the research directorate of Research England. The directorate is responsible for Research Englands policy development, evaluation and implementation aimed at maximising the excellence and impact of research in universities in England. The role will work across both the research funding and the environment teams within the research directorate.
Purpose
This role will provide policy support to both the research funding and research environment teams within the research directorate. This role will involve working with colleagues and more independently to support the development and delivery of policy. It will also involve engaging with colleagues across Research England, UKRI and other external organisations, including universities.
You will be well-organised and self-motivated with an interest in the higher education sector. You will be capable of working both within a team and more independently, and will play a key role in developing and delivering projects with others. You will have good attention to detail and be able to develop strong working relationships with stakeholders at a range of levels of seniority.
Job description
Main outputs and activities
The areas outlined are initial areas of responsibility:
Funding Policy You will provide support to the research funding team (Head of Research Funding and three Senior Policy Advisors) to deliver and monitor the delivery of Research Englands Quality-related Research (QR) funding and competitive funding schemes. This will involve:
- Contributing to the delivery of Expanding Excellence in England (E3) round 2, including providing secretariat support for the Assessment Panel and Programme Board, managing queries, and supporting the Senior Policy Adviser.
- Undertaking monitoring of existing and future E3 awards.
- Undertaking monitoring of existing International Investment Initiative awards.
Research Environment You will support the research environment team (Associate Director of Research) to deliver a number of policy areas in research environment, supporting a positive research culture and promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. It is likely to include:
- Supporting a senior policy advisor on the development of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion action plan
- Supporting a senior policy advisor on the development of open access policy
- Contributing to the delivery of Research Englands programme for supporting post graduate researchers

Essential:
- Experience managing projects and working collaboratively to deliver outputs
- Ability to manage own workload, resolve competing demands, and cope with changing priorities in a flexible and proactive way
- Experience analysing and interpreting complex information to draw conclusions and inform recommendations
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders both orally and in writing
- Experience of working effectively with internal and external stakeholders
- Graduate level qualifications or equivalent demonstrable experience
- Flexibility to travel to meetings, including in locations that may require travel outside of work hours
Desirable:
