Job summary
The role will provide the successful candidate with exposure to senior management across Cabinet Office and wider Civil Service and the decision-making process at a senior level. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is a self-starter in terms of their ability to identify areas of concern and the solutions that may be available to them. You will be part of a team working in increasingly agile areas of the
business, so you will be required to undertake a wide variety of tasks and prioritise accordingly. The role will be fast paced and may require working long hours on some days.
Please note this role involves travel to various front-line locations with regular attendance in London and due to the nature of the role this position is offered on a full-time basis only.
Overnight stays maybe required when the need arises.
Job description
The Chief of Staff role to the Director Modernisation & Reform Unit plays a crucial role in supporting the Director to focus on highest priorities and deliver on objectives. You will support the Director by driving forward aspects of work and priorities on their behalf.
You will need to be flexible as the role will be shaped by events, but the following responsibilities are indicative of what to expect in the roles:
- Ensuring that the Director is suitably prepared for all meetings and visits and is kept abreast of key business developments so that they can make strategic, operational and public facing decisions; and their time is used effectively so that they can meet their objectives, priorities and wider duties.
- Understanding, articulating and helping drive forward the Directors priorities, and in turn, supporting the wider business to deliver its objectives.
- Providing professional support and represent them effectively to internal and external stakeholders.
- Liaising with their Senior Leadership Team; working with them to resolve issues/problems which can be managed without the direct and personal involvement of the Director.
- Acting as an immediate point of knowledge and advice for the Director on various areas of MRU business including providing timely briefings (written and/or verbal) to the Director in preparation for key meetings/events.
- Provide diary management and administrative support (including making travel arrangements) to the Director. This will include: responding to meeting requests in a timely manner; ensuring appointments are recorded appropriately.
Person specification
You must have:
- Demonstrable experience of working with senior leaders in a high-profile working environment
- Ability to organise a daily workload by priorities and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment
- Demonstrable administration and support skills, with strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to communicate concisely and coherently to a wide variety of audiences
- Demonstrable experience of managing a busy diary and/or inbox Demonstrable experience of handling sensitive information, displaying tact and diplomacy and maintaining confidentiality
- A proactive approach to problem-solving with strong decision-making skills
