Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to support UK Defence in evidence-based decision making through the application of analytical techniques. Our analysis is used to optimise the estate on which our service personnel live, work and train, both in the UK and overseas.

Person specification

The Data Exploitation (DEx) Analytics team leads on the delivery of bespoke analytical projects for Defence customers. In addition to delivering projects, the team has a central role; providing guidance, support and governance to analysts and users across DIO.

The key objectives of this role are to support evidence-based decision making on the Defence Estate and promote analytical standards. This will include:

•    Lead and deliver bespoke analytical projects, advising customers and senior colleagues in the appropriate analytical techniques to meet their requirements. 
•    Exploring & suggesting innovative solutions to exploit DIO’s extensive datasets, using a range of analytical techniques to support evidence-based decision making.
•    Lead the development of DIO’s advanced analytics, geospatial analytics and data science capabilities.
•    Creation of National Statistics.
•    Building a network of contacts from DIO, other government departments and analytical professions to enable sharing of ideas and knowledge transfer.

As a member of the DEx’s Analytics Team you will have the opportunity to be involved in projects drawing on techniques from the following disciplines: statistics, descriptive analytics, operational research, social research and geospatial analytics. Example projects include:
•    Forecasting Carbon Emissions to monitor progress against Net Zero Targets.
•    Analysing People Survey data and understanding demographics within the organisation.
•    Forecast maintenance costs to inform budgetary and sustainability strategies.

This post currently has direct line management responsibilities, with opportunities to support colleagues and engage in a range of leadership activities.

Experience using any of the following is desirable but not essential: SAS, SQL, Arc GIS, Python, R, SPSS, Any other analytical toolset or coding language.

A degree containing some mathematical content, a relevant level 4 apprenticeship or 2 years experience working in an analysis or data science field.

Employment Hours

Travel Costs

There will be no reimbursement for any travel expenses for the interview.
