Job summary
Finance is at the heart of decision making in the Department for Business & Trade. The Strategic Finance team works across the department to understand delivery plans and the associated funding requirements, providing expert financial advice, analysis and assurance to the Permanent Secretary, Ministers and Executive Boards.
Within the Strategic Finance team sits the Strategic Financial Reporting team. They work across the Department for Business and Trade to develop a deep understanding of the financial position across the department in year.
Job description
The Role
Responsibilities are varied but will include:
- Developing a strategic understanding of the departments strategy and delivery plans and the financial implications arising from them, analysing and monitoring the financial risks and issues.
- Building and maintaining relationships across Finance and the wider Department.
- Build a detailed understanding of the departments in year current and forecast expenditure and manage the production of high quality financial reports to support decision making at all levels of the organisation.
- Leading the translation and adding insight to financial data to support key discussions at the Departmental Board, Executive Committee and with HMT.
- Leading the drafting for briefing on DBTs in year financial position to senior officials and Ministers
- Providing ad-hoc analysis and presentations to the business and across the finance function.
- Leading responses and developing resolutions as required for ad-hoc enquiries including PQs / FOIs and HMT commissions.
Person specification
Applicants will demonstrate the ability to work across organisational boundaries in order to deliver with strong communication skills, including communicating complex information to non-specialist audiences and influencing the decision making in the business.

- Comfortable and confident in working at pace to manage a full workload with conflicting short and long-term priorities.

This includes the ability to critically consider and confidently challenge stakeholders regarding their delivery or information and translating across functions to obtain a joined-up approach.
- Analyse and monitor financial risks and opportunities as they arise.
- Be proactive, curious, and tenacious in collating data from a range of sources, analysing and interpreting it, looking for trends and spotting issues before they arise.
- Present and communicate complex data and information to a range of audiences as part of the month end reporting timetable, in response to ad hoc queries and to drive efficiencies across DBTs budgets.
- Leading collaboratively with structure, by constructing clear timelines and processes, with interdependencies and owners, to lead others to successful delivery with clear products and outcomes for the process.
- Fostering and leading a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration between policy, programmes, the business, finance and other corporate services.

Selection process details
Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
