Job summary
Situated within the Commercial Function in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), The Government Commercial Sponsorship Team (GCST) is the Sponsorship Centre of Expertise for the UK Government.
The team leads sponsorship activity across the UK Governments most high-profile events and campaigns. These have included the UKs participation at Expo2020 Dubai, COP26 and COP27 (the UN Climate Change Summit), Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cup Doha and other high-profile business, sporting, and cultural events. Current projects include Expo2025 Osaka, British Council, Great Campaign and the Rugby World Cup and Olympics (France), COP28 and UK Africa Investment Summit.
We work with many of the UKs largest companies including HSBC, Vodafone, BP, Reckitt, Barclays, JLR, Shell, Sainsburys and Diageo. The team is also responsible for developing sponsorship policy, governance and capability across government. The team works closely with Cabinet Office, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and other government departments, operating both in the UK and across our embassy network around the world.
The Sponsorship Manager will support the GCST delivery of sponsorship programmes across government including delivering sponsorship programmes at major government events, supporting on sponsorship sales sponsor account management, and assisting in the delivery of the cross government Sponsorship Advisory Service in the UK and around the world.
Job description
Operations, Policy and Capability Development
- Lead due diligence checks on all potential sponsors and monitor on an ongoing basis.
- Ensure transparency by correctly publishing and storing sponsorship contracts on behalf of the team.
- Triage and respond to Advisory Service queries, providing relevant guidance from the Sponsorship Toolkit or further contact details where relevant.
- Create and manage a detailed and up-to-date stakeholder map, which is aligned to key events and priorities.
- Manage all finance-related matters for the team, including invoicing sponsors and IFRS15 assessments and act as a point of contact for the finance team to ensure all queries are quickly resolved.
- Create a data-led monthly sponsorship dashboard
- Provide support and training for the teams Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System, ensuring that it is kept up-to-date.
- Support the development of policies, processes and operational guidance to promote awareness and understanding of sponsorship.
- Support the development of wider organisational and x-Whitehall capability plan that is aligned to the Government Commercial Function.
Account Management & Development
- Act as secretariat function for weekly sponsorship meeting, arranging invitations, creating content and recording and monitoring actions.
- Attend regular account management meetings to ensure all aspects of the contracted rights are discussed and delivered in full, producing concise and quantifiable action points for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Act as a point of contact for internal teams, notably; Communications, Content and Operations teams to ensure timely delivery of sponsorship rights within event parameters.
- Develop a strong understanding of client sponsorship objectives alongside the event objectives, working with the lead account manager and internal teams to propose and develop creative solutions to deliver against both sponsor KPIs and event objectives.
- Closely monitor, update and evolve internal processes and documents to ensure a central source of sponsorship rights and a clear critical path are constantly accurate.

Sponsorship Sales
- Proactively assist the sales team by researching detailed marketing information about potential sponsors, aiding in the creation of sales materials, and supporting as required throughout the sales process.
- Provide advice, guidance and support to the wider organisation on rights development, proposition development, value determination and securing the right sponsors.

- An understanding of and interest in sponsorship as a marketing tool.
- An ability to work proactively in a structured way and at pace in a complex, changing environment.
- Experience in a business facing role with project management and reporting requirements.
