Job summary

Situated within the Commercial Function in the Department for Business and Trade (DBT), The Government Commercial Sponsorship Team (GCST) is the Sponsorship Centre of Expertise for the UK Government.  

The team leads sponsorship activity across the UK Government’s most high-profile events and campaigns. These have included the UK’s participation at Expo2020 Dubai, COP26 and COP27 (the UN Climate Change Summit), Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cup Doha and other high-profile business, sporting, and cultural events.

Current projects include Expo2025 Osaka, British Council, Great Campaign and the Rugby World Cup and Olympics (France), COP28 and UK Africa Investment Summit. We work with many of the UK’s largest companies including HSBC, Vodafone, BP, Reckitt, Barclays, JLR, Shell, Sainsbury’s and Diageo.  The team is also responsible for developing sponsorship policy, governance and capability across government.

The team works closely with Cabinet Office, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and other government departments, operating both in the UK and across our embassy network around the world.   

The Senior Sponsorship Manager will be responsible for GCST delivery of sponsorship programmes across government including delivering sponsorship programmes at major government events, managing sponsors and supporting colleagues on sponsorship around the world. 

Job description

  • Sponsorship management of various UK and international events –  coordinating sponsorship sales and working with cross government colleagues in finance, marketing and event delivery workstreams.
  • Strategic account management of 1-2 industry sectors – becoming the sponsorship sector expert opening up new opportunities and managing relationships with companies in your sectors.
  • Sponsorship management of key geographical regions – Supporting colleagues in His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner regions to secure and manage sponsors with best practice and within required governance.   
  • Sponsor account management – managing the delivery of programmes for sponsors at events.
  • Supporting the growth of GCST across government, including developing best practice way of working.  
  • Some line management responsibilities may be required. 

Person specification

Essential Criteria

The candidate will require: 

  • A deep and proven understanding of sponsorship as a marketing tool.
  • Experience account managing high profile sponsors for large events.
  • Experience managing multiple stakeholders to deliver successful sponsorships.
  • An ability to develop creative sponsorship solutions for partners. 
  • An ability to work proactively in a structured way and at pace in a complex, changing environment. 

Desirable Criteria  

  • Experience of working in government. 
  • Experience working in international markets.
  • Sponsorship sales experience. 

Personal Attributes & Skills 

  • A minimum of three years account management experience at either a marketing or events orientated agency or with a leading rights holder or sponsor.  
  • A strong understanding of sponsorship, it’s role in the marketing mix and the benefit it provides sponsors.  
  • Ability to form strong relationships with clients and build trust and rapport.  
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal – with the ability to influence.  
  • Confidence to present to senior management both in government and with sponsors.  
  • Ability to prioritise, organise, multi task and manage a diverse and complex workload and to work under pressure.
  • Strong planning and organisation skills with excellent attention to detail.  
  • High degree of computer literacy with ability to use Microsoft, PowerPoint, Office 365, Adobe Acrobat and CRM systems such as Salesforce.  
  • Enthusiasm and self-motivation.  
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically. 
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and under your own initiative. 
  • Able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the business, including a willingness to travel to attend meetings at client offices and work event weekends.   
  • A passion for what you do with a positive, friendly “can do attitude”.

Selection process details

Interviews for this vacancy will be conducted virtually. We will, however, consider in-person interviews by exception.
