DBT’s international marketing team is offering the rare opportunity for a Deputy Head of International Marketing to support its award-winning and innovative international marketing campaign in a dynamic and energised marketing team. 

The Deputy Head of International Marketing will work across the GREAT Global Trade (GGT) campaign, the UK Government’s flagship international marketing campaign. The GGT promotes the UK as a premium destination for overseas buyers and investors. It is a central part of the Government’s world-renowned GREAT Britain and Northern Ireland campaign, showcasing the best of what our whole nation has to offer to inspire the world and encouraging people to visit and do business, invest, and study in the UK.

Working alongside creative professionals across the department, wider government as well as with industry-leading creative and media agencies will provide you with an excellent platform to gain experience and develop your marketing career.

You will be responsible for ensuring our communication and marketing activity is insight-based, audience-focused and delivers measurable outcomes in support of DBT business priorities. You will work collaboratively across the Department and the business network to provide campaign leadership.

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to lead international work spanning the marketing mix, from above the line and PR campaigns to low cost and no cost activities. The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Deliver effective, measurable, and transparent marketing outcomes through campaigns – paid and low-cost/no-cost.
  • Develop a flexible team across multiple projects in parallel ensuring people management and operational management as the highest priorities for the team.
  • Build effective relationships with senior stakeholders to ensure successful campaign delivery and to enhance the reputation of our team and the UK Government.
  • Work closely with the leadership team in HQ and internationally to support the Communications and Marketing Global Hub in Hong Kong.
  • Develop audience driven, evidence based integrated marketing campaigns in support of DBT priorities, underpinned by robust evaluation.
  • Deliver against international campaign objectives by taking ownership of paid activation across channels – lead generation and awareness.
  • Oversee the production of campaign content/collateral and briefing products to support the strategic approach of the campaign.
  • Respond efficiently and effectively to commissions from Ministers, special advisers, and senior teams across DBT/HMG as business priorities emerge.
  • Support an engaged and high-performing international marketing function.
  • Maximise the return on investment from budgets allocated for marketing activity and ensure spend is properly managed.
  • Liaise with the business, including agencies and international posts, to understand their needs, enhance existing relationships in place, improve internal collaboration and advise on the role marketing can best play.
  • Work closely with insight and evaluation colleagues to ensure campaign strategies are insight led and outcomes measurable. Work with them to develop reporting dashboards as required by the leadership team.
  • The successful candidate will have direct line management responsibility. They will be a motivational leader who will support and raise the capability of the team, by ensuring that all parts function smoothly and to a high standard.

Hybrid Working

The role will be based in either London or Darlington. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Strategically minded with a strong delivery background in marketing campaigns.
  • Able to understand ROI and the importance of delivering strong marketing campaign results.
  • Digital marketing campaign experience and an understanding of direct response channels.
  • Experience in interpreting data to problem solve and drive strategy and campaign planning.
  • Excellent relationship management skills and experience of managing internal and external stakeholders (including media, creative agencies etc.).
  • Strong leadership skills; this role requires a highly motivated individual with the ability to take ideas and turn them into a reality.
  • Initiative and an enthusiasm for hard work. This is a demanding role so a track record of managing multiple complex marketing tasks to tight deadlines is essential
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and managing uncertainty and complexity to achieve objectives.
  • Financial skills – managing budgets and ensuring financial accountability.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with colleagues and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and deliver challenging individual objectives.

  • Have the ability to manage several concurrent priorities, projects and a team is also important, as this role requires delivering a number of ongoing work streams in parallel.
