ONS operates a hybrid working arrangements where colleagues are required to work in their allocated office location at least 20% of their work time from January 2024 raising to a minimum of 40% attendance from April 2024. The exception to this is for colleagues based at the Darlington Economic Campus who will be required to attend the office for a minimum of 20% of their work time due to current accommodation constraints.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is looking for experienced Software Engineers to join our active community of software professionals, working within our Cloud technology division.

Job description

When you join the ONS you will be part of an active community of practice of 180 software engineers, working on critical projects and programmes across the organisation in a collaborative development environment. 

We are looking for experienced Cloud software Engineers, who are either Front-end , Back-end or Full Stack.  

As part of an agile and multi-disciplinary development team, you will learn from and support each other in the delivery, support and continuous improvement of critical systems and tools.

You will be working on Cloud Technologies- In particular Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

Responsibilities

You will be involved in the full software development lifecycle, carrying out the design, running, testing and continuous improvement of software to meet user needs, and will be responsible for writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach, and working to open-source principles to create code that is easy to re-use.

As a software engineer you will be responsible for:

  • Designing, delivery and maintenance of quality software products to serve a variety of user needs and enhancing existing software products to meet evolving user needs.
  • Maintaining and supporting services, identifying, locating and fixing faults, and taking proactive actions to avoid loss of service.
  • Triaging issues and building stories for more involved issues, document processes and support more junior colleagues.
  • Evaluating and adopting tools and approaches appropriate for the environment.
  • Supporting an environment where continuous or “on demand” delivery can be enabled by the business, using effective delivery and deployment techniques.
  • Sharing knowledge of tools and techniques; identifying and sharing good practices and collaborating to improve the capability of the team
  • Peer reviewing the work of others.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

  • Ability to support the prioritisation and defining of approaches to the full Software Development Life Cycle, from defining user stories through to testing, delivery and ongoing support of products.
  • Ability to design, code, test and support complex work, following key principles and design patterns, and carry out agreed maintenance and operational tasks.
  • Ability to identify and compare the best processes or delivery methods to use, including measuring and evaluating outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to peer review work of others, share knowledge and support more junior colleagues. 

Technical Criteria:

We are looking for developers and engineers with knowledge of Cloud technologies, with a willingness to collaborate, learn and grow during their time with us.

You will be working on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) utilising Angular 2+ and have good working knowledge of TypeScript, HTML language, Node.js and CSS.

    Stage 1 – Application & Sift

    Assessment at application stage will be based on your work history and skills and experience. Your CV section on the application should be tailored to demonstrate any skills, knowledge and experience that are relevant to the role. 

    The technical questions (the Additional questions section of the application) should be no longer than 500 words each. You should use this space to provide evidence for the technical criteria within the person specification. As the criteria are scored, we would recommend that you give clear examples for each including the impact of your actions and set them out using the STAR acronym (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

    In cases where there is a high number of applications the sift pass mark may be adjusted and candidates will be invited to interview in merit order, i.e. those scoring the highest.

    Stage 2 – Interview
