This role works within the Digital, Data and Technology directorate with the aim of designing technical solutions to meet business requirements.

You will be allocated to transient project teams to work with a multidisciplinary team that applies agile methodologies. Within a project team, your role is to undertake structured analysis of technical issues, translating this analysis into technical designs that describe a solution. You will be consulted about technical design and design patterns, looking for opportunities to collaborate and reuse components. You will work closely with developers and testers in collaborative teams who will design, build and test IT solutions.

This role is aligned to the role of Technical Architect in the Digital, Data and Technology Profession Capability Framework.

Job description

  • Bridging the gap between the technical and non-technical. You will speak on behalf of technical teams and facilitate relationships with indirect stakeholders.
  • You will understand how governance works and what governance is required. You will take responsibility for the assurance of parts of a service and know what risks need to be managed.
  • Making and guiding decisions. You will make decisions characterised by managed levels of risk and complexity and recommend decisions as risk and complexity increase. You will resolve technical disputes between peers and indirect stakeholders, taking into account all views and opinions.
  • You will apply strategy, using patterns, standards, policies, roadmaps and vision statements. You will challenge them and provide guidance.
  • Turning business problems into technical design. You will design systems characterised by managed levels of risk, manageable business, and technical complexity and meaningful impact. You will work with well understood technology and identify appropriate patterns.
  • Understanding the whole context. You will understand trends and practices outside your team and how these will impact your work. You can see how your work fits into the broader strategy and historical context. You can consider the patterns and interactions on a larger scale.

Person specification

Ability:

  • Innovation. You know about innovation and can apply this to your own work.
  • Stakeholder relationship management. You know how to identify important stakeholders, tailoring communication to their needs, and work with teams to build relationships.

Experience :

  • IT Analysis. Previous experience of working in an IT Analyst role. You will know how to investigate, analyse, visualise, articulate and solve complex problems and concepts, and make disciplined decisions based on available information. Such skills include applying thinking, gathering, and analysing information using comprehensive tools and techniques; using data to formulate technical designs; and identifying and analysing options to assess feasibility and operational impact. You can ensure that the solution aligns with the business vision, objectives, and strategy as well as user needs and you can identify and recognise a viable solution or control.
  • Agile Working. You know about agile methodology and can apply an agile mindset to all aspects of your work. You can work in a fast-paced, evolving environment and use an iterative method and flexible approach to enable rapid delivery. You are unafraid to take risks, willing to learn from mistakes and appreciate the importance of agile project delivery for digital projects in government.

Technical:

  • Technical Experience Microsoft Azure (training will be provided), Process Mapping and related technologies.
  • Qualifications (or working towards). BCS Foundation Certificate in Digital Solution Development (or equivalent).
